Monday, January 15, 2007  Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress
France/China 2002 subtitled  Nominated Golden Globes Best Foreign Language Film

China has become such an economic powerhouse that it's hard to believe capitalists and intellectuals there were viewed with contempt not long ago. During the Cultural Revolution of 1966-1976, children of "bourgeois" professionals were required to live in re-education camps where they were taught to revere Mao Zedong and work the land as peasants. Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress, France's nominee for Best Foreign Film in the 1998 Golden Globe Awards, is about this re-education and is based on the experience of the director Dai Sijie who spent four years of his life in a similar program. It is sweet, funny, sad and profound the sort of film that becomes more remarkable when you realize it's based on someone's real life.  <Story Continues>

12.2 Percent of Arizona Residents Lived in Hungry or Food Insecure Households

Arizona had 12.2 percent of people living in households that were considered to be food insecure from 2003-05, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) annual report released yesterday. Each year, the Census Bureau measures food insecurity through a series of household survey questions about the ability to obtain enough food for an active, healthy life for all members. comedy to the rest of the nation and beyond!  Stu Baker, Juan Saldana, Don Steinmetz and Robert Wagner

Visual Scenarios & Scenic Dimensions
Meet the artists at opening, January 6th, 6-9pm.

“We’re out to prove that some of the most exciting art exhibits in Scottsdale aren’t necessarily staged in the downtown Scottsdale Arts District,” insists Diane Sanborn, BRIO Fine Arts Center Director.  “Our first 2007 exhibit features critically acclaimed artists, Susan Falcon-Hargraves and Scott McNeill, who will be exhibiting their work next year in solo exhibits at the West Valley Art Museum.” Slated to run January 6th-31st, “Visual Scenarios & Scenic Dimensions” showcases paintings and sculpture.  “We’re especially proud that Susan has been teaching drawing and acrylics at BRIO practically from our inception in 2004,” adds Sanborn.

The nostalgic paintings of Susan Falcon-Hargraves are inspired by photos of the 40’s and 50’s

Falcon-Hargraves:  Remembrances of Things Past Inspired by family photos, the nostalgic “table” oeuvre of this painter met with great enthusiasm during the FirstMonday art salon at Phoenix’s Burton Barr Library last June.  “Dinner used to be a big ritual, everyone sat at a table, and the mood of this setting is very telling,” said Falcon-Hargraves in a New Times review by Douglas Towne. The artist recently expanded her nostalgic visual scenarios to include unacknowledged psychological subtext in the form of animals  “Every family had its multi-ton elephant or 800-pound gorilla -- representing scandal or eccentricity -- lurking in those Ozzie and Harriet style dining or living rooms,” she says.

McNeill: Exploring New Dimensions For more than a decade, this artist has been combining multiple layers of subject matter and intertwining different levels of composition between wood-carved forms and painted imagery.  In essence, McNeill has been developing, exploring and refining a new art form!  These achievements have not gone unnoticed; in 2001, he was awarded the Dexter Jones Award/ National Young Sculptors Award for bas-relief sculpture from NYC’s National Sculpture Society.  Continually “pushing the envelope”, McNeill has developed another unique art form by creating night-and-daytime glow works from castings of his woodcarvings.  “These glow pieces are brand new; however, the style and imagery have been 11 years in the making,” says McNeill.

Anticipating a Year of Exciting Events  “BRIO is anticipating an exciting year of special events as well as art exhibits,” points out Sanborn.  “For instance, the New York City printmaking expert, Don Welden, will stage a special demonstration of his solar plate etching technique on April 11th and conduct a special workshop April12th - 14th.” Co-author of “Printmaking in the Sun” with Pauline Muir, Welden’s innovative technique has been highly praised by iconic artists such as Jasper Johns, Robert Motherwell, and Willem de Kooning.

“The upcoming Welden events underscore the fact that BRIO is the only art center in the area with its own printing press,” says Katherine Kurgan, manager at Arizona Arts Supply. “Our company is happy to support such a progressive organization with scholarship money for children and reduced prices on art supplies for all their students.”

BRIO Fine Arts Center, located at 8340 E. Raintree Drive, C-6, Scottsdale.  Three blocks west of loop 101 on Raintree. Hours are M-F 9-5 and Sat. 9-12.  480-941-8310.

In the War Against Artistic Mediocrity, Veronica Escudero Takes No Prisoners

Scottsdale, January 2007. In an exhibition titled "Escudero  Surrenders," Scottsdale's Kerr Cultural Center presents the work of highly accomplished visual artist Veronica Escudero. Students of  Mexican culture and history, religion buffs and art enthusiasts will be able to view Escudero?s mixed media masterpieces January 3-30, 2007. The showing includes drawings on Fabriano paper, diptychs and triptychs on wood and traditional canvasses, many of which explore dynamic variations on cubism and pay tribute to Christian ideals and doctrine. An opening reception featuring traditional Mexican hors d'oeuvres and beverages will be held January 8, 2007 at 7 p.m.

Veronica Escudero divides her work into two categories, those of Fine Art and Sacred Art. Her pieces range in style and execution from the whimsical and joyous, to the solemn and reverent, to the intensely political. About her process the artist is eminently clear. "I don't plan anything out," she says. Instead, she waits, in a very real sense, for inspiration. A Born-Again Christian, Ms. Escudero  attributes her lifelong love of painting, eclectic body of work and considerable talent to the inspirational powers of the Holy Spirit. "I'm just the paintbrush," she says. In addition to her religious influences, the colors in Ms. Escudero's work often reflect the earthy tones favored by the Russian born French painter, Marc Chagall. Also evident in her work are geometric representations of space reminiscent of Picasso's paintings, as well as the revolutionary spirit of Frida Kahlo, who was born in Mexico City, a place to which Ms. Escudero maintains deep ties.

One of Escudero's Sacred Art paintings, Father, Into Your Hands I Commit My Spirit, demonstrates in particular her rare ability to delight the eye while simultaneously offering intellectual significance. This image depicts a man?s face, fragmented, fixed in a mask of agony, and adorned with Christ?s signature crown of thorns portrayed here as silver spikes not unlike the headdress worn by America's own Lady Liberty. "I knew I wanted to do a piece about Christ on the cross," Escudero says, describing the centerpiece of "Escudero Surrenders." Here, and perhaps only here, in the work of this artist do spirituality and secular concerns find themselves such comfortable bedfellows. Her work as a whole proves an impressive explication of her unique style, diverse background and firmly held personal and religious ideologies.

ASU’s Center for Violence Prevention Receives $3 Million

Watts family gift is largest in West campus history

Arizona State University officials have announced the largest single private investment in the 22-year history of its West campus, a $3 million gift from the Mike and Cindy Watts family that will help fund the Center for Violence Prevention and Community Safety in the university’s College of Human Services.

“This gift is a substantial investment in the College’s mission to create academic excellence and to make an impact within the local community,” said John Hepburn, dean of the College of Human Services. “It will enable the Center for Violence Prevention and Community Safety to engage the local community in transformative programs of use-inspired research, technical assistance, and public education.”

Hepburn noted that the Watts family endowment of the directorship of the Center includes a request by the family that mirrors their commitment to their native Maryvale community.

“Cindy and Mike have asked that an initial project of the Center be to examine the scope and nature of crime and violence in Maryvale,” reported Hepburn. “That effort will bring together a large number of stakeholders from within Maryvale in a collaborative effort to identify specific outcomes and to effect meaningful changes that will address the problem. We will work closely with those who share our goal to identify needs, leverage resources, and facilitate changes that will lessen crime and violence in Maryvale.”

West campus provost Mark Searle said the gift will have a significant and lasting impact on the Center and the greater Phoenix area.

“The West campus has long been recognized for its community engagement and its commitment to building partnerships that provide true and measurable benefits to all who live here,” said Searle.  “The Watts Family’s generous gift to endow the directorship in the Center for Violence Prevention and Community Safety contributes to the advancement of our commitment and will allow us to continue to expand our collaborative services in an effort to reduce crime and violence in our neighborhoods.”

At the announcement, the Watts shared how ASU president Michael Crow’s vision for a “New American University served as a magnet for their expanded support and also their personal beliefs played an important role in their gift to ASU.

“We’re proud to support ASU because we believe in everything Dr. Crow and his team are doing to provide a first-class education while making an impact on our community and the world through research and service,” said Mike, who founded and built Sunstate Equipment Company into one of the largest independent equipment leasing companies in the U.S.

“Violence is such a limiting factor in life,” said Cindy, a member of the ASU Foundation’s Women & Philanthropy program.  “It creates fear in individuals, families and entire communities, which in turn destroys opportunities.  When people come together and when everyone involved is of great heart, tremendous change can be influenced.

“If our gift can reduce or eliminate that violence, especially by getting at its root causes, we will have achieved our goal for giving.”

The Center, under the leadership of Charles Katz, an associate professor in the School of Criminology and Criminal Justice, not only provides research but also offers recommendations and analysis to make a difference in the community. Some of the projects tackled by the Center include examining sex offender clusters; gathering data on drug use, guns and gangs; and evaluating the success of special courts in Arizona.

 Fun for the Whole Family

When creating this year’s festival, three things were paramount locating diverse performing and visual art talents and artwork to fit a range of collections and budgets, keeping it real for kids and younger budding artists, and providing a means to give back to the community.  The Arts Council of the North Valley, with more than 175 volunteers, and numerous local organizations, have addressed all three.

“We are thrilled to have the quality and diversity of performing artists at this year’s Festival,” says Kenda Newbury, performing arts chair. “These amazing performing artists are not to be missed!”

Accompanying the fabulous stage productions, the audience can take pleasure in gourmet lunch creations that are specially prepared for the event by Our Kitchen to Yours, Phantom Caterers, and Garden Angel Tea Room.

To bring the magic of art to youngsters of various ages, the festival is hosting two Creation Station Activity Rooms and three Special Entertainment Segments. Children from pre-kindergarten to sixth grade can enjoy hands-on creative experiences designed to educate and encourage freedom of expression.  Participants will create art with instruction and supplies provided by three organizations that specialize in teaching art to children: Kidz Art, Young Rembrandts, and Kidsnart. Parents can sign up their children for 1-hour sessions while they are enjoying the artwork, music, performances, and specialty foods. Check-in is at the festival welcome desk. Space is limited, so reservations are recommended. Reservations are also recommended for Great Arizona Puppet Theater, Harmony High, and Arizona Opera children’s performances. Bad Golf Raises $14,000

It was “Bad Golf for a Good Cause” Nov. 8 when Sterling Fine Homes and Land raised $14,000 during its second annual golf tournament to benefit John C. Lincoln’s Desert Mission Food Bank and Children’s Health Services.

Forty golfers and nine sponsors turned out for the event at the Paradise Valley Park Golf Course, which was organized by Sterling’s owners – Connie Edelman, Stephanie Anderson, Kris Hyland and Jeri Hyland.  Sterling is a real estate company with offices in North Scottsdale, Cave Creek, Surprise and Tramonto.  This year’s chairs were Sterling colleagues George Land and Elizabeth Waynick.

“We are thrilled that so many of our agents, clients and sponsors came together to support such a wonderful cause,” Connie Edelman said. “Desert Mission’s services really make a difference for people in the Phoenix community.”

Desert Mission, which traces its North Phoenix origins to the 1920s, recently transformed its Food Bank into the innovative and trend-setting Fourth Street Market, an attractive, shopper-friendly store where qualified people can get both emergency food supplies and shop at significantly reduced prices for the foods they prefer to eat.  The Fourth Street Market was called a “model for the nation” by American hunger expert H. Eric Schockman, PhD, chairman of the National Anti-Hunger Organizations.

John C. Lincoln’s Children’s Health Services provide care to uninsured and underinsured children who might otherwise go without basic medical and dental services.

The check presentation was made following their golf tournament. It was accepted by John C. Lincoln Health Foundation CEO Elaine Hugunin along with Foundation employee Brooke Edelman, a former Sterling employee who introduced Sterling to Desert Mission.

The Owner/Broker team of Sterling Fine Homes & Land brings over 34 years of combined real estate sales and leasing experience in the Carefree, Cave Creek, Scottsdale, Surprise and North Phoenix areas. The Owner/Brokers have dedicated themselves to knowing the market in these areas. This has earned them top producing status in the community. The team specializes in Desert Mountain, Legend Trail, Grayhawk, Troon, Troon North, Terravita, Tramonto, Anthem, and other luxury communities.

For more information on Sterling Fine Homes and Land, call (480) 575-6575 or visit www.sterlingfinehomes.com. For more information on John C. Lincoln’s Desert Mission community service programs, call 602-870-6060, ext. 1234 or visit www.JCL.com

SAILORS SET SIGHTS ON RAISING LEUKEMIA RESEARCH MONEY

Arizona's biggest sailing event of the year will happen at Lake Pleasant, January 12-14, 2007.  Arizona Yacht Club will host their 47th Birthday Regatta and the 8th annual Arizona Leukemia Cup Regatta, the nation’s first Leukemia Cup Regatta of 2007.

The eighth annual Arizona Leukemia Cup Regatta will take place with the 47th Annual Birthday Regatta of the Arizona Yacht Club, at Lake Pleasant.  The first national Leukemia Cup Regatta was held in Annapolis in 1993,  and since then the series has expanded to other sites across the county, including Arizona.   Gary Jobson, world class sailor and ESPN Sailing Commentator is National Chairman of the event; he is also a survivor of lymphoma.

Of his own experience, he says, “I want to offer you this thought: Take a deep breath every morning; say thank you for your health.  The alternative is unbelievably tough.”

In addition, “Twenty-five years ago, if a child came down with leukemia, he/she was given only a 5% chance to live,” said Jobson. Today, the survival rate for the most common form of childhood leukemia is 85%. “That we have come so far in so short a time is truly remarkable, but as long as leukemia remains a leading killer of children, we cannot rest,” he continued.

This giant race and party kicks off with a one-day regatta on Friday to practice some tacks and then dinner and music on Friday night under the tent. Racing continues on Saturday and Sunday with 80 or more entrants, circled by a fleet of spectator boats.

Registration fees, pledges raised by crew members, and auction proceeds will go to support the mission of the Desert Mountain States Chapter of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. The Chapter helps to fund national research, and serves patients and their families in Arizona and Utah. There will be exciting prizes for Top Fundraisers, and individual participants who raise $8,500 or more can also qualify for an all-expense-paid Fantasy Sail with Gary Jobson. In 2006, this event raised over $66,000 to help fund national research and to serve patients and their families in Arizona and Utah.

The Society encourages spectators to enjoy festivities at the Lake on January 13.  Tickets for the Dinner/Auction are $15.  To obtain a fundraising packet, a list of local and national prizes, or to donate an item for the Saturday evening auction, and/or learn more about Society programs, please contact Karen Chapman at The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society in Phoenix at 602-788-8622, x26, or email Karen.Chapman@lls.org.  To learn more about the event AYC Birthday Regatta, please contact Kyle Clark of the AYC at 480-650-6311 or email kyleaclark@yahoo.com.  SOUTHWEST AMBULANCE AND MADD TEAM UP TO PREVENT DRUNK DRIVING

To raise awareness during the height of DUI Season, Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) and Southwest Ambulance are teaming up once again to prevent drunk driving. The campaign is part of MADD’s annual “Tie One On for Safety” campaign that was launched at an event on November 15, 2006 at the Gilbert Police Department attended by Southwest Ambulance and family members of Gilbert Officer Rob Targosz, who died as a result of a drunk driver. Southwest Ambulance is placing red ribbons on all 200-plus of its ambulances in Arizona in hopes of raising awareness of preventable crashes.

“It’s frustrating for emergency crews since we know how preventable these crashes and the resulting injuries are if people simply didn’t drink and drive,” said Josh Weiss, Director of Communications for Southwest Ambulance.  “We hope that by placing red ribbons on all of our ambulances during this holiday season that it will remind the public not to drink and drive.”

The public is encouraged to tie red ribbons onto car antennas as a reminder of the dangers of drunk driving. A high number of DUI related crashes each year occur between Thanksgiving and New Years.

It's everything that life can be all wrapped in a story beautifully told about a country that occupies the American imagination more than ever these days. That this film was banned in China tells you how much China has not changed since the days of Mao. The film's gorgeous locations and Jean-Marie Dreujou's cinematography are a super bonus!

Faiths and Cultures Come Together to Help Save 5-Year-Old

On December 26, people of all faiths and cultures are encouraged to come together to work toward a common goal…to save lives. United Blood Services, Arizona’s oldest and largest community blood center, has joined with the Arizona Interfaith Movement, the Catholic Diocese of Phoenix and the Arizona Ecumenical Council to host the first Interfaith Blood and Bone Marrow Drive on Tues., Dec. 26.  Representatives from the Governor’s Office of Faith Initiatives and United Blood Services Community Leadership Council are also supporting this lifesaving mission.  Interfaith drives will be held at both Bourgade Catholic High School and at the First Institutional Baptist Church from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Everyone is in a hurry this time of year, making the winter holiday season the most difficult time of year to maintain blood supplies and the most important time to give the gift of life. That simple act of giving could save the life of Isaiah, a 5-year-old Valley boy who was diagnosed with leukemia in October and who is in search of a lifesaving bone marrow transplant.  December 26 participants at the Interfaith Drive will have the opportunity to donate in Isaiah’s name while helping to rebuild Arizona blood supplies.

“People are simply busier during the winter holiday season than they are at other times of the year. Although donors may have other things to do, patients continue to need blood,” said Audrey Gietzen, Executive Director of United Blood Services/Arizona. “Here in Arizona, it takes 700 blood donations every day to meet hospital patient needs – patients who are also eager to return to their families and enjoy the holidays at home.”

Leukemia patients like Isaiah, and those who receive bone marrow transplants to treat other diseases, frequently require transfusions of platelets, red blood cells and plasma.  Platelets are the smallest component in whole blood and are essential for normal blood clotting.  Many of these patients are not able to produce normal amounts of platelets on their own due to their illnesses.  They also often undergo surgical procedures and require other blood components such as red blood cells to fight anemia or plasma to provide necessary hydration.

To make an appointment to donate blood at the Interfaith Drive, please call 1-877-448-GIVE (4483) or visit www.UnitedBloodServices.org/Arizona  (enter the sponsor code Interfaith). In appreciation for taking time out of their holiday week to save lives, all donors will receive a holiday T-shirt and can enter to win Phoenix Suns, Insight Bowl, Fiesta Bowl Parade and Tempe Block Party tickets.  In conjunction with United Blood Services quarterly donor appreciation raffle, December 26 participants will be automatically entered to win a diamond pendant, courtesy of Schmitt Jewelers of Phoenix.

In the War Against Artistic Mediocrity, Veronica Escudero Takes No Prisoners

In an exhibition titled "Escudero  Surrenders," Scottsdale's Kerr Cultural Center presents the work of highly accomplished visual artist Veronica Escudero. Students of  Mexican culture and history, religion buffs and art enthusiasts will be able to view Escudero's mixed media masterpieces January 3rd-30th, 2007.

This image depicts a man's face, fragmented, fixed in a mask of agony, and adorned with Christ's signature crown of thorns portrayed here as silver spikes not unlike the headdress worn by America's own Lady Liberty.

In March of 2006 Ms. Escudero's work was on exhibit at the Monterrey Peninsula College Art Gallery as part of a juried two person show and she has had multiple solo and group exhibitions at a wide variety of venues including the Jadite Gallery in New York City. Her work has also been exhibited in Arizona at the West Valley Art Museum, the Shemer Art Center, Gammage Auditorium and The Phoenix Center. Recently, three of Escudero's paintings were selected for inclusion in Triumph of Our Communities:  Four Decades of Mexican American Art, a book celebrating the work of Chicano and Chicana artists compiled by Prof. Gary D. Keller of the Hispanic Research Center at ASU. Ms. Escudero has lived in Mexico City, Chicago, Boston, Tucson and Phoenix. She currently maintains two studios, one in Pennsylvania and the other in Arizona, and resides with her husband for half the year in each home.

"Escudero Surrenders" will run at the Kerr from January 3-30, 2007. Viewing times vary so please contact the Kerr Box Office at (480) 596-2660. The Kerr Cultural Center is located at 6110 Scottsdale Rd. (off Rose Lane), south of the Borgata Shops. For more information regarding the work of Veronica Escudero please visit: www.escuderoart.com.

To report food insecurity in each state, USDA uses three-year averages to compensate for limited sample sizes and give a better estimate of the number of households experiencing hunger.

In last year’s report, 12.7 percent of Arizonans were experiencing low food security. To effectively analyze the decrease you need to compare population estimates. Using estimates from the Arizona Department of Economic Security as of July 1, 2005 it shows 12.2 percent of the population would be equivalent to 737,488 people. When compared to estimates as of July 1, 2004, 12.7 percent would be 742,347 people. This is only 4,859 fewer people.

Among the 12.2 percent of Arizona households considered to have low food security, 3.8 percent were living in households that were considered to have very low food security; this means that one or more people in the household were hungry over the course of the year because they couldn’t afford enough food. Compared with the 2002-04 data, Arizona demonstrated a .3% increase in the number of people experiencing very low food security.

Again, when we evaluate population estimates for very low food security populations, 2005 numbers would be 229,709 people compared to 2004 population estimates of 204,584 people. This is a 25,125 person increase!

“When you consider the number of low paying jobs, the residential instability and low participation in federal nutrition assistance programs, it is no surprise that we have had an increase in the number of people experiencing very low food security,” said Ginny Hildebrand, Executive Director of the Association of Arizona Food Banks. “This time of year is when Arizonans who are food secure think about those who are not and provide generous contributions to help. Food banks in our state continue to need the support of generous donors to continue meeting the increased demand,” said Hildebrand.

Nationally, more than 35 million people live in households that are considered to be food insecure. “It is simply unacceptable that after years of economic growth, 35.1 million people in this country face a constant struggle against hunger,” said Jim Weill, president of the Food Research and Action Center (FRAC). “We will be calling on Congress to attack this shameful, national condition with new commitment and new energy in the coming months.”

Scoop Scores With Scraps
Until last year Woody Allen was in a horrible rut. He made film after film that was accepted by neither critics nor audiences. However, with Match Point, the director’s foray into drama, he had an Academy Award nominated piece of cinema that was embraced by audiences. He didn’t waste any time with his newfound success as his newest work, Scoop, is now in theatres and features the female lead of Match Point.

Of course, Scoop is a leap from Match Point considering Allen has an acting role in Scoop and it is his return to comedy. All of his chips are on the table with this flick and luckily he has come out ahead. That is not to say that Scoop is great or that it is even close to being as masterful as Match Point. Scoop is what it is – an above average Allen comedy that fan’s will love and everyone else will mildly enjoy.

As with all of Allen’s comedies, though, a very dry sense of humor is required to get anything out of the jokes. Sometimes they work and other times they don’t (fortunately, the majority leans toward the former) but there aren’t any moments were the typical moviegoer will laugh-out-loud. Scoop is more of a smiling motion picture than a laughing one. It is best just to sit back, relax and enjoy.

Perhaps the thing that makes Scoop a more effective feature than, say, Small Time Crooks or The Curse Of The Jade Scorpion is its elaborate plot. Much like Match Point, the movie’s storyline can’t be summed up in one sentence. This shows that Allen has learned something from his dramatic success. Judging by this effort, it is a good idea for Allen to place greater importance on the tale than the gags because when the tale works the gags come naturally– especially to a great filmmaker like Allen.

The plot in question involves a recently deceased newspaper reporter named Joe Strombel, played by Ian McShane, who receives an amazing scoop on the Tarot Card Killer in the afterlife. Summoning as much power as he can, Strombel haunts (so-to-speak) college newspaper reporter Sondra Pransky, played by Scarlett Johansson, during a magic show to inform her of the scoop.

When Sondra tries to explain the supernatural event to the magician, Sid Waterman, played by Allen, he does not believe her until he sees Strombel with his own two eyes. Based on the scoop, the duo, pretending to be father and daughter, infiltrates the society of millionaire and possible-serial-killer Peter Lyman, played by Hugh Jackman. The impossible task of uncovering the truth is only worsened when Sondra falls for Peter’s charms.

Scoop will not win over folks that have yet to like an Allen comedy but it is a worthwhile way to spend an hour and a half. Allen has made better but he has also made a lot worse. The star power is there – despite Johansson’s irritating attempts to mirror Allen’s comedic aura – and the story is enough to go off of even without the laughs. It is nice to see that Allen can still do comedy although I, for one, would love to see him do another stellar drama.

Group tours: $2 per person.

Cave Creek Museum will host several educational programs at the Museum throughout the season. There is no additional charge to attend these programs, but because seating is limited, reservations are suggested. The October program schedule follows:

Saturday, October 21st: “2 p.m. to 3 p.m. Speedy, Bouncy, Smelly and Crafty: Using Your Senses to Detect Animals of the Southwest” Seating is limited to 15. Please call to reserve a seat. For Children Ages 3 to 6.

This program shows children how to use their ears, eyes, and noses to detect Sonoran Desert wildlife they might otherwise overlook.  Through stories, movement, and games, preschoolers will learn more about the Roadrunner, Desert Cottontail, Javelina, and Coyote. This program is funded by a grant from the Kiwanis Club of Carefree.

Highlights of new exhibits at Cave Creek Museum include:

  • Ray Swanson’s art and memorabilia. A former Carefree resident and renowned painter, Ray Swanson was a long-time member and past board president of the prestigious Cowboy Artists of America. The acclaimed artist passed in 2004.

  • Centennial Celebration Parade and Fiesta Days history.

  • Ladies fashions dating back to 1880.

  • Children in “play clothes” with toys from the 1940s.

  • The Jones Family: Samuel and Helen Terrell Jones and their son, Middleton, were one of the first families to provide medical equipment and apparatus used in neurological surgeries during the 1940s.  Samuel was also active with the Barbershop Quartet and Middleton was influential in the field of construction. In 1976, at age 83, Helen authored “Sex & the Zodiac.”  The family also owned Military Road Remount Station, which was used by the Calvary in the 1870s and was also the site of “Chicken Ranch” in Cave Creek.

  • “Desert Foothills Scenic Drive” Sign: It’s back, thanks to Friends of the Scenic Drive, a division of the Greater Pinnacle Peak Association, and volunteer Horst Berkner who re-created the sign from a photograph! The volunteer Friends organization donated the original wooden entry sign to the Museum in the mid-1990s, but a microburst destroyed it. The replica will be formally donated to the Museum at the Carefree/Cave Creek Chamber Mixer on Wed., Oct. 11. The historic sign will once again be part of the Museum’s outside exhibit.

Give Blood.  Be a Hero.  Win a New 2007 SKY Roadster!

United Blood Services, has announced a lifesaving partnership with the Phoenix area Saturn retailers to build summer blood supplies. Through August 31st, all donors who give blood at any Valley United Blood Services donor center or organization-sponsored blood drive will be automatically entered to win a new 2007 Saturn SKY Roadster. Donors will also receive a second entry that may be deposited at any local Saturn retail facility.  Six finalists’ names will be drawn throughout the campaign to participate in the September grand prize drawing.  The winner will drive away as a hero to Arizona hospital patients and the proud owner of a new Saturn SKY Roadster, courtesy of your Phoenix area Saturn retailers.

Through the campaign with United Blood Services, Saturn’s goal is to encourage more than 40,000 people to give blood this summer.  “Saturn believes in putting people first, even after they drive away," said Dan Jonuska, Saturn of Scottsdale Retailer.  “Our core mission is built on becoming part of the communities in which we work.  We are committed to doing whatever we can to help ensure that Arizona patients and their families can count on an ample blood supply this summer,” Jonuska added.  In addition to the donation of a new Saturn SKY Roadster, the Phoenix area Saturn retailers have scheduled blood drives at their showrooms to make it convenient for employees and customers to give blood.

The campaign with Saturn is appropriately scheduled between the Independence Day and Labor Day holidays, the time of summer when donor vacations reduces blood donations the most. According to Audrey Gietzen, Executive Director for United Blood Services/Arizona, the major goal of the campaign with Saturn is to motivate donors to give blood more often this summer, especially around the holiday weekends.  “While most donors are eligible to give every eight weeks, 65 percent of Arizona donors give just once each year,” said Gietzen.  “We are excited to have the opportunity to partner with the Phoenix area Saturn retailers in a two-month campaign that encourages donors to give blood during the summer,” Gietzen added.

Give blood during July or August to earn a chance to win a new 2007 Saturn SKY Roadster.  To make a donation appointment at any United Blood Services location, call 1-877-448-GIVE (4483) toll free or visit http://www.bloodhero.com/ .

IHOP OF ARIZONA DONATES $52,450 TO CHILDHELP®

IHOP restaurants of Arizona presented a check in the amount of $52,450 to Childhelp earlier this month at the Childhelp Children’s Center of Arizona in Phoenix. The funds were the result of a promotion with Arizona IHOP restaurants during the month of April, National Child Abuse Prevention Month. Guests of IHOP had the opportunity to purchase $2.00 pledge cards to support the Arizona-based charity Childhelp. In return, donors were given coupons for $2.00 off their next IHOP meal.

2006 marks the sixth consecutive year IHOP restaurants in Arizona have contributed to Childhelp as part of their commitment to supporting the fight against child abuse and neglect. The promotion was strongly supported by IHOP staff, who demonstrated their enthusiasm by encouraging guests to join in supporting Childhelp.

“Last year, more than 7,000 Arizona children came to our children’s advocacy center in Phoenix as a result of situations of child abuse,” commented Sara O’Meara, Childhelp chairman, CEO and co-founder. “Nationally, more than four children die as a result of child abuse in the home each day.”

“Childhelp deals with an issue that our IHOP employees and guests in Arizona feel passionately about and are very willing to support,” said Chris Milisci, president and CEO of Romulus Restaurants, an Arizona IHOP franchisee. “We are happy that we can provide help for children in need within our communities and are proud of and grateful to all IHOP employees and guests whose efforts and contributions made this year’s fundraising event a huge success.”

Founded in 1959 by Sara O’Meara and Yvonne Fedderson, Childhelp is one of the oldest and largest national nonprofits dedicated to the prevention and treatment of child abuse and neglect. Arizona is home to the organization’s national headquarters; the Childhelp National Child Abuse Hotline, 1-800-4-A-CHILD®; the Childhelp Children’s Center of Arizona (a one-stop facility for the investigation and treatment of child abuse) and the Childhelp Children’s Mobile Advocacy Center of Northern Arizona.

On the first Wednesday of each April, Childhelp asks people across the country to light four-wick candles and observe four minutes of silence or prayer in recognition of the four to five children who die each day from abuse, and the millions more who continue to suffer. Additional information about Childhelp and ways to participate in the National Day of Hope are available at www.childhelp.org or by calling (480) 922-8212.

The IHOP family restaurant chain, with 31 locations across Arizona, has been serving a wide variety of breakfast, lunch and dinner selections for more than 45 years. Offering more than 14 types of pancakes as well as omelettes, breakfast specialties, burgers, sandwiches, chicken and steaks, IHOP's diverse menu appeals to people of all ages. IHOP restaurants are franchised and operated by Glendale, California based IHOP Corp. As of June 30, 2006, the end of IHOP's second quarter, there were 1,264 IHOP restaurants in 48 states and Canada. IHOP Corp. common stock is listed and traded on the NYSE under the symbol "IHP."
