Top 10 Reasons Tortilla Flat Sizzles in the Summer
It’s Time to Plan a Rockin’ Road Trip to one of Arizona’s Most Dynamic Destinations

As the end of summer draws near and a new school year looms on the horizon, one last minute day-trip destination that your family can't afford to miss is Tortilla Flat. Started as a stage coach stop in 1904, Tortilla Flat has become a unique western town, restaurant and saloon frequented by bikers and surfer types alike. Known for its spicy chili, ghost town and museum, Tortilla Flat is the perfect destination for a day-trip with the family and a fun adventure with friends.  And in spite of the soaring temperatures, there remain ten compelling reasons to pack the family up and visit the historic wild wild west.      (Tortilla Flat, AZ) – With apologies to David Letterman, Michael Lonero, General Manager of Tortilla Flat, warmly offers 10 reasons you should brave the heat and visit his unique western town, restaurant and saloon.          Tortilla Flat is an authentic remnant of an old west town, nestled in the midst of the Tonto National Forest, in the Superstition Mountain Range. As well as being home for six adventurous people, Tortilla Flat has a charm that has surpassed time. The day-trip destination started out as a stage coach stop in 1904, but neither fire or flood has been able to remove this historic stop along the historic Apache Trail.    “It’s a fun, family-friendly environment with a great information filled staff,” relates Lonero. “You can see people in flip-flops, next to cowboys, next to bikers – all enjoying each other’s company; it’s truly a place for everyone.”  So, without further ado, pack up the car, fire up the motorcycles, load the kids into the Winnebago and scream: “Road trip!” Then, get ready to belly up to the bar in one of Tortilla Flat’s saddle barstools.

Top 10 Reasons Tortilla Flat Sizzles in the Summer (spoken in your best Dave voice):

  • 10) Prickly pear ice cream (and loads of other flavors and fudge and old fashioned candy for the kids – or the kid in you!)

  • 9) The coldest beer in the west!

  • 8) Voted one of America’s most scenic routes for a day trip, here’s your itinerary for adventure: visit the Goldfield Ghost Town; hop on Dolly the Steamboat for a beautiful cruise of Canyon Lake; and then, bring your appetite and get ready for a delicious lunch at Tortilla Flat!

  • 7) The biggest burgers – and the HOTTEST chili in town (the killer chili your mama warned you about!!!)

  • 6) Great people watching – Teddy Roosevelt one stopped in and cowboys, bikers and movie stars are all partial to Tortilla Flat (It’s a great place to shoot photos – or your next movie) Most recently, Kelly Ripa from Live with Regis and Kelly mosied in.

  • 5) Come witness a piece of history at our museum – The Tortilla Flat Museum is bursting with interesting artifacts recounting the history of the Superstition Mountains and the famous Apache Trail.

  • 4) Did we mention the coldest beer in the west?

  • 3) If you still haven’t cooled off after lunch, go take a dip in Canyon Lake

  • 2) 90,000 reasons to visit this summer – and counting – You’ll see over $90,000 worth of currency on our walls from some 67 countries around the world

  • (And, drum roll please, the number one reason to visit Tortilla Flat this summer)

  • 1) Hey, if you have TOO much fun at Tortilla Flat, go ahead and make it a “stay-cation.” Camping is available at Canyon Lake or book a room at the nearby Apache Lake Marina.

To experience Tortilla Flat, take the US 60 EAST (Superstition Freeway), to APACHE JUNCTION; then, take the IDAHO exit and go NORTH to STATE ROUTE 88;Next, take a RIGHT on SR 88 and travel 18 miles NORTH-EAST to TORTILLA FLAT;TORTILLA FLAT is located 2 MILES past CANYON LAKE near MILE MARKER 213. Gilbert, AZ June 4, 2009 – The East Valley Youth Symphony (EVYS) continues to grow despite tough odds at their founding four years ago. And now the EVYS is adding a bell choir to the group. The bell choir will be led by local favorite Rosanne Tidwell, a newly hired, talented, youth director.

Sherri Gurr of EVYS said, “It’s gratifying to know that our community recognizes the importance of the arts. An organized and challenging music program helps give kids structured opportunities to progress musically and have fun.”

New Technology Helps Protect Sleeping Infants - And Gives Parents Peace Of  Mind.
www.snuza.com (West Hollywood, California) -- In recent years the incidence of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) has been reducing, but it is still the leading cause of death for babies in their first year of life. Despite the overall reduction in SIDS, parents are still being cautious by turning to under-mattress movement monitoring devices on the market.  These conventional devices have brought some comfort to parents but just not enough.  So now a new baby movement monitoring technology is being brought to North America by Pneo.  The Snuza Halo is a small, light, portable device that provides a unique new way to effectively monitor a sleeping infant. GLENDALE NEWS
Northern Avenue Storm Drain Project.
Drivers who travel along Northern Avenue from 47th to 63rd avenues will experience restrictions, starting in July for approximately 13 months, as the city installs storm drains to reduce flooding along Northern Avenue during heavy rain storms. A public open house will be held on Wednesday, July 1 from 6-7 p.m. at the Landmark Middle School located at 5730 W. Myrtle Ave. Residents will have the opportunity to learn more about the project. Restrictions will include limiting traffic to one lane in each direction and temporary no left turns along the construction route. Construction will occur in an east to west direction. Business and residential access will be maintained during the construction. Heavy traffic is expected during the rush hour commute. The Glendale Transportation Department encourages drivers to plan accordingly. Message boards have been installed to let the public know of the restrictions. For more information, call 1-877-203-0042.

Glendale’s From The Heart Program. Nineteen non-profit agencies that provide essential services to Glendale’s most vulnerable children, families and elderly residents received $224,500 in grants on June 24, 2009 from money donated through Glendale’s From The Heart program. The money will be used to feed Glendale’s hungry and provide home medical equipment for the frail and elderly and emergency programs for victims of violence and abuse. All the money was raised through Glendale’s From The Heart program, which enables residents and businesses to add $1 to their city utility bills each month. Also, as a result of a new initiative with The Ellman Companies, all money collected from Westgate City Center’s water dance fountain is donated to From The Heart. The program also receives money through individual donations. The BHHS Legacy Foundation provides a 50-cent match for every dollar donated to From The Heart. Today’s distribution represents money donated from calendar year 2008.  Since From The Heart began in 1997, more than $1.7 million has been collected and distributed to non-profit agencies serving Glendale residents. NRA Appeals Seventh Circuit Ruling to the U.S. Supreme Court

Fairfax, Va. - Today, the National Rifle Association filed a petition for certiorari to the U.S. Supreme Court in the case of NRA v. Chicago. The NRA strongly disagrees with yesterday's decision issued by a three-judge panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit, holding that the Second Amendment does not apply to state and local governments.

"The Seventh Circuit got it wrong. As the Supreme Court said in last year's landmark Heller decision, the Second Amendment is an individual right that 'belongs to all Americans'. Therefore, we are taking our case to the highest court in the land," said Chris W. Cox, NRA chief lobbyist. "The Seventh Circuit claimed it was bound by precedent from previous decisions. However, it should have followed the lead of the recent Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals decision in Nordyke v. Alameda County, which found that those cases don't prevent the Second Amendment from applying to the states through the due process clause of the Fourteenth Amendment."

This Seventh Circuit opinion upholds current bans on the possession of handguns in Chicago and Oak Park, Illinois.

"It is wrong that the residents of Chicago and Oak Park continue to have their Second Amendment rights denied," Cox concluded. "It's time for the fundamental right of self-defense to be respected by every jurisdiction throughout our country."

Established in 1871, the National Rifle Association is America's oldest civil rights and sportsmen's group. Four million members strong, NRA continues its mission to uphold Second Amendment rights and to advocate enforcement of existing laws against violent offenders to reduce crime. The Association remains the nation's leader in firearm education and training for law-abiding gun owners, law enforcement and the military. Link

The American Way - READ THIS INCREDIBLE SPEECH!
Alan Korwin gave a speech to a large group on Patriot’s Day, commemorating the shot heard ‘round the world. Several thousand people turned out on a nice sunny day and to my surprise, constantly interrupted with applause. Seems he touched a nerve with this uplifting piece about what makes America great.

"The American Way is hard work. It is keeping the benefits of your hard work. It  is ownership of private property, and the sanctity of a contract between people. It is the idea that you and you alone own the fruits of your labors. It is the idea—of paramount importance—of self ownership. You and you alone own and are responsible for you. It’s a tautology. The king doesn’t own you. The state doesn’t own you. You own you. This is not a right you demand, or get from the state, or earn. It is a fundamental right of the fact that you exist. It is a right that comes from your Creator, by nature. It is the natural order of things. And it is honored here like nowhere else—that’s why we’ve achieved so much."      Story Continues

Late Nite Catechism By Vicki Quade & Maripat Donovan, Ongoing; call for dates and times, Stage 2, Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts, Single ticket price: $36, The longest-running play in the Valley is still in a class by itself! Audience members are the students in catechism class, and Patti Hannon is "Sister" in this hilarious interactive comedy. You better be on your best behavior, or else Sister is likely to put you in the corner‹on stage! Every performance is unique and will appeal to all, regardless of one¹s faith.

Late Nite Catechism II: Sometimes We Feel Guilty Because We Are Guilty
By Maripat Donovan, Ongoing; call for dates and times,
Stage 2, Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts, Single ticket price: $36, That¹s right, the fun continues in Sister¹s second catechism class! You don¹t need to graduate from the first class to enjoy this one; Sister will give extra attention to her slower students. Sister has felt banners, a filmstrip, handouts, historical facts and hysterical insights to explain every nun¹s goal: getting into heaven and bringing along as many of the faithful as possible. Using a special version of Chutes and Ladders to demonstrate her point, Sister tells us where we¹ve gone wrong, and no one is excused from her firm belief that "sometimes we feel guilty because we are guilty."
