In 1857 the new Postmaster General for the Buchanan Administration, Aaron Brown, authorized several new western mail routes.  One of these was between Kansas City, Mo. and Stockton, CA.  The route in New Mexico Territory (the states today of Arizona and New Mexico) followed the Beale Wagon Road from Albuquerque to California.  Several mail stations began construction along the route, including one in Cataract Canyon, which will be the focus of this presentation.

One of the greatest adventures in history occurred here in Arizona 141 years ago when Major John Wesley Powell and his eight boatmen/explorers made the first known, deliberate traverse of the Colorado River flowing through Grand Canyon in August of 1869. This saga is one of the epics of American exploration, roughly on a par with the Lewis & Clark expedition of 1804-06. Oddy, this amazing story has been inaccurately and poorly told by Powell himself and then by virtually every historian writing about the trip for well over a century---until the 2003 publication of Ghiglieri's First through Grand Canyon: the Secret Journals and Letters of the Crew who Explored the Green and Colorado Rivers."  Ghiglieri will talk about the crew, the river expedition, its challenges and how they were met, and the aftermath of this, one of North America's most poorly understood major explorations.

New Sharlott Hall Museum Exhibit Honors Arizona Women

            “How Splendid is Our Past,” a new exhibition highlighting women’s vast contributions to Arizona’s development, opens at Sharlot Hall Museum on Saturday, September 18. This centennial exhibition, which is included with Museum admission, will be on display in the Museum Center Gallery through January 2, 2011.

            “How Splendid is Our Past” is a traveling centennial exhibit that illuminates the lives and contributions of a number of Arizona women, including Museum founder Sharlot M. Hall. The exhibit was created by Arizona Women’s Heritage Trail (AWHT), a statewide legacy project linking women’s history with historic sites.

            Former U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor serves as the Exhibition Honorary Chair. “We know which men helped develop Arizona,” notes Justice O’Connor. “This exhibit illuminates some of the women who forged the state’s identity as well.”

            This exhibit illustrates the lives and stories of a representative group of amazing women who helped to build Arizona. These women were artists, business owners, politicians and cultural leaders, such as Sharlot M. Hall, the first woman to hold territorial office and founder of the Sharlot Hall Museum. A few of the other Arizona women featured in the exhibit are:

·        Tucson’s Luisa Ronstadt Espinel, a talented musician and preservationist of Spanish songs, who was the great aunt of singer Linda Ronstadt;

·        Viola Jimulla, first woman “Chieftess” of the Yavapai Prescott Indian Tribe and renowned basket weaver;

·        Frances Willard Munds, State suffrage leader from Prescott and Arizona’s first female State Senator.

·        Mary Elizabeth Colter, architect of the southwest who designed such Grand Canyon buildings as Hopi House, the Watchtower and the Hermit’s Rest; designer of Fred Harvey hotels in Winslow and other municipalities throughout the country.

·        Nellie Bush, politician, teacher, artist, attorney, riverboat pilot, club woman, real estate developer and businesswoman. One of the first female students at the University of Arizona Law School and first woman to chair the Arizona House Judiciary Committee and to serve as U.S. Commissioner in Arizona.

            The exhibition also includes displays acknowledging the contributions of several groups of women, including the Harvey Girls and the African-American Servicewomen at Fort Huachuca.

            This traveling exhibit is sponsored by the Arizona Office of Tourism, Arizona Humanities Council and Arizona Public Service, with assistance provided by the Sharlot Hall Museum and Arizona Historical Society. It is scheduled for other venues around the state in conjunction with Arizona’s state centennial celebration in 2012.

August 7 Western History Symposium Evening Venue Change

The Western History Symposium’s August 7th evening program is moving to the Wyndham Garden Hotel, 4499 East State Route 69 in Prescott due to a scheduling conflict at Hotel St. Michael. The August 7th day program remains at Sharlot Hall Museum, with a series of presentations beginning at 10 a.m.

The evening program at the Wyndham Garden Hotel features a 7:30 p.m. presentation by Dr. Martin Feess, the author of Theodore Roosevelt’s Arizona Boys. He will discuss Roosevelt’s special connection to the Arizona Territory and his relationship with those “rough riding men from Arizona” who served under his command during the Spanish-American War.

The evening program kicks off with a social hour and cash bar hosted by Prescott Corral of the Westerners beginning at 5:30 p.m., followed by dinner. ALRA Chairman Joins Federal Immigration Lawsuit to Defend Arizona and SB 1070

The Biennial Meeting Of States, And The Arms Trade Treaty

Two major meetings, possibly affecting American gun owners' rights, will occur at the United Nations (UN) in New York over the next several weeks.   They are the Fourth Biennial Meeting of States to Consider the Implementation of the Programme of Action to Prevent, Combat and Eradicate the Illicit Trade in Small Arms in all its Aspects, ("BMS4") June 14-18, and the Arms Trade Treaty Preparatory Committee ("ATT Prep. Com.") July 12-23.  The NRA will be fully and actively involved in these meetings.

The BMS4 is a continuation of the so-called "Programme of Action" (POA) adopted by the UN at a conference in 2001.  Anti-gun groups saw the original POA as a vehicle for UN gun bans, registration schemes and other radical proposals.  The U.S., through the efforts of Ambassador John Bolton, forced the removal of provisions targeting privately-owned firearms from the  POA.  It was not able to stop the POA itself, and the UN holds "Biennial" meetings every two years to keep the POA alive.  Heavily-funded anti-gun groups will again attempt to get the UN and its member states to target the right to arms at the BMS4.  A Mexican diplomat will chair the meeting and Mexico, which blames its crime problems on the U.S., is now pushing for more gun control in America.  Anti-gun, anti-U.S. measures could well be on the table.

Topical Issues Add Spice to August 7 History Gathering in Prescott
                Politics, controversial legislation, gold, robbery, murder, war heroes and Rough Riders will be among the topics explored at the seventh annual Western History Symposium on Saturday, August 7 in Prescott.

                The Sharlot Hall Museum will be the venue for five presentations about the Old West and the Arizona Territory on August 7 from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Then at 7:15 p.m. at the Hotel St. Michael, Dr. Martin Feess, the author of Theodore Roosevelt’s Arizona Boys, will discuss Roosevelt’s special connection to the Arizona Territory and his relationship with those “rough riding men from Arizona” who served under his command during the Spanish-American War.

                The Symposium presentations are free and open to the public, although seating at the Museum is limited. The Symposium includes five presentations at the Museum’s Lawler Exhibit Center on August 7, starting at 10 a.m. with the “Canyon Diablo Train Robbery of 1889,” presented by Dr. Paul Hietter of Mesa Community College. Other presentations are “Murder on Whiskey Row,” presented by Prescott Corral member Fred Veil, an attorney and a regular Symposium speaker; “Early Female Politicians in Arizona,” presented by Dr. Heidi Osselaer of Arizona State University; “Ernest Love,” the namesake of Prescott’s Love Field,  presented by author Alan Roesler; and “The Founding of Prescott,” presented by author-historian Al Bates.

Brad Zinn’s "The Great Comedians, Those Felt Hat and Big Cigar Funny Men," is a heartfelt salute to his childhood heroes that includes generous portions of comedy, music,juggling, magic, rope spinning, audience participation, and extended impersonations of Johnny Carson, George Burns, Jack Benny, and Will Rogers. Brad’s impressions also include W. C. Fields, Groucho Marx, Jimmy Durante, George Jessel, Fred Allen, and Red Skelton.

The show begins with Brad’s own comedy and interactions with the audience, followed by a memorable "Tonight Show" visit with Carnac, the Magnificent (Johnny Carson) that leads smoothly into a visit from the inventor of the "topical monologue" - Will Rogers. Will enters
spinning a rope and regales the audience with witty observations from the world of current events, circa 1932. Amazingly, Will’s satire sounds as though it could have been ripped straight from today’s headlines!

Next is an uncanny recreation of George Burns. George talks about his early years in show business up to the time when he met and married Gracie Allen and they became an instant success. George warbles a memorable vaudeville tune or two, and finishes with a poignant "Say
goodnight, Gracie." Gracie’s voice is heard to cheerily reply, "Goodnight."
The only person that can follow George Burns is, of course, his old friend Jack Benny.

Jack (as portrayed by Brad) strolls onstage with horn-rim glasses and violin in hand. After leading the audience in singing “Happy Birthday,” Jack hilariously explains how he raises money for symphony orchestras. He ends with his famous violin solo, "Love in Bloom."

The show’s rousing finale is an original song, written by Brad and musician friend Bill Swayze, "The Great Comedians." The tune includes segments highlighting Groucho Marx, W. C. Fields, Fred Allen, Jimmy Durante, Ed Sullivan, George Jessel, and others. The beloved Red
Skelton concludes the evening with his signature "Good night, and may God bless!"

Brenda Zinn also offers an intriguing performance of Vaudeville style Sand Painting as a pre-show warm-up at 6:45 pm, so come early for a good seat and don't miss Ms. Bre's Vaudeville style Sand Paintings. This art has not been seen in over two generations!

IMMIGRANTS THEN AND NOW... GIVE ME YOUR TIRED, YOUR POOR HUDDLES MASSES YEARNING TO BREATHE FREE

 My wife, Rosemary, wrote a wonderful letter to the editor of the  OC Register which, of course, was not printed. So, I decided to  "print" it myself by sending it out on the Internet.  Pass it along if you feel so inclined.  Written in response to a  series of letters to the editor in the Orange County Register: 
 
  Dear Editor: 
 So many letter writers have based their arguments on how this land  is made up of immigrants. Ernie Lujan for one, suggests we should  tear down the Statue of Liberty because the people now in question  aren't being treated the same as those who passed through  Ellis Island and other ports of entry. 
  
 Maybe we should turn to our history books and point out to  people like Mr. Lujan why today's American is not willing to  accept this new kind of immigrant any longer. Back in 1900  when there was a rush from all areas of Europe to come to  the United States, people had to get off a ship and stand in a  long line in New York and be documented.  Some would even  get down on their hands and knees and kiss the ground.
  
 They made a pledge to uphold the laws and support their new  country in good and bad times. They made learning English  a primary rule in their new American households and some  even changed their names to blend in with their new home. 
 
 They had waved good bye to their birth place to give their  children a new life and did everything in their power to  help their children assimilate into one culture. Nothing was 
 handed to them. No free lunches, no welfare, no labor laws  to protect them. All they had were the skills and craftsmanship  they had brought with them to trade for a future of prosperity. 
 
 Most of their children came of age when World War II broke out.  My father fought alongside men whose parents had come straight  over from Germany , Italy , France and Japan . None of these  1st generation Americans ever gave any thought about what  country their parents had come from. They were Americans fighting  Hitler, Mussolini and the Emperor of Japan . They were defending  the United States of America as one people. 
 
 When we liberated France , no one in those villages were looking  for the French-American or the German American or the Irish  American.  The people of France saw only Americans. And we carried  one flag that represented one country.  Not one of those immigrant sons  would have thought about picking up another country's flag and waving it  to represent who they were.  It would have been a disgrace to  their parents who had sacrificed so much to be here.
  
 These immigrants truly knew what it meant to be an American.  They stirred the melting pot into one red, white and blue bowl. 
 
 And here we are with a new kind of immigrant who wants the  same rights and privileges. Only they want to achieve it by  playing with a different set of rules, one that includes the  entitlement card and a guarantee of being faithful to their  mother country.
  
 I'm sorry, that's not what being an American is all about.
  
 I believe that the immigrants who landed on  Ellis Island in the early 1900's deserve better than that  for all the toil, hard work and sacrifice in raising future  generations to create a land that has become a beacon for  those legally searching for a better life. I think they  would be appalled that they are being used as an example by  those waving foreign country flags. 
 
 And for that suggestion about taking down the Statue of Liberty,  it happens to mean a lot to the citizens who are voting on  the immigration bill. I wouldn't start talking about  dismantling the United States just yet..

25th Anniversary Concert at Mesa Arts Center May 22 at 7:00 pm Phoenix Children’s Chorus Celebratory Performance and “Bon Voyage”
Send Off for their June performance Tour to China

 
The Valley’s leading Children’s Chorus concludes its 25th Anniversary Season when it performs a powerhouse concert at the Mesa Arts Center’s Ikeda Theater on Saturday May 22nd at 7:00 pm.  Over 200 children will participate in the concert, representing the Encore, Cadet, Prep and Concert choirs of the Phoenix Children’s Chorus.  Selections for the 25th Anniversary Concert include “Defying Gravity” from the Broadway smash, “Wicked”, choral arrangements of the rock ballads “MLK” (originally performed by U2) and Queen’s “We Will Rock You” as well as several heart lifting pieces including “The Dream Keeper”, “ Shady Grove” and a commissioned piece to commemorate the Phoenix Children’s Chorus’ 25th Anniversary entitled “A Jubilant Song”.  The Chorus will be joined by Broadway star, Tregony Shephard, who portrayed the role of Madame Thenardier in Les Miserables at the Imperial Theater on Broadway as well as on the show’s National Tour.  The concert will be led by Artistic Director Ron Carpenter.

 About the Phoenix Children’s Chorus With members ranging from eight to eighteen years of age, the Phoenix Children’s Chorus has grown from a small organization of just 35 members, to its current program comprised of four choirs, three accompanists and four directors with over 220 children participating in performances and guest appearances.  The choirs include Prep, Cadet, Concert and Encore where choristers learn the basic elements of vocal technique, performance and musicianship skills. The Chorus’ ongoing mission is to provide a comprehensive choral music education in a positive learning environment in order to foster team effort, self-discipline and self esteem for young people in Phoenix.

 The Phoenix Children’s Chorus has performed with many of the Valley’s top arts organizations including The Phoenix Symphony, ASU’s Symphonic Chorus & Wind Symphony, The ASU Choral Union, The Arizona Arts Chorale, The Grand Canyon Men's Chorale, The Sonoran Desert Chorale and the Male Orpheus Chorus of Phoenix.  In addition, the award-winning PCC touring choirs have traveled to Europe, Russia and throughout the United States to serve as musical ambassadors. Working jointly with The Sister Cities of Phoenix, the Chorus has travelled to two of Phoenix’s Sister Cities, Ennis, Ireland and Hermosillo, Mexico as well as a tour to Canada in June 2009.  This June, the Chorus embarks to China for its historic 2010 Performance Tour of mainland China.  With performances in venues around the great country including Shanghai, Xian and Beijing, the highlight of the tour includes a cultural exchange and joint concert at the Shanghai Children’s Palace.

Postal Service Launches Green Newsroom Information Resource Ready for Earth Day
WASHINGTON
— On the eve of the 40th anniversary of Earth Day, the U.S. Postal Service unveiled its green newsroom, a one-stop shop for all its environmental information. Replete with photos of its energy-saving vehicles and facilities, green products and services, and a time-lapse video of the construction of New York’s largest green roof, the Postal Service’s green newsroom is its newest, most informative site to visit on Earth Day.

 “At the Postal Service’s green newsroom, every day is Earth Day,” said Sam Pulcrano, vice president, Sustainability. “Our history of environmental efforts goes back more than 100 years and Earth Day is a perfect opportunity to tell Americans about the Postal Service’s planet-friendly initiatives.”

 According to Pulcrano, the USPS green newsroom is a robust source of sustainability news and answers key green questions including:

  • How big is the Postal Service’s carbon footprint?

  • How is the Postal Service decreasing its carbon emissions?

  • How many hundreds of millions of dollars in energy costs has the Postal Service saved since 2007?

  • How many hundreds of thousands of tons of waste did the Postal Service recycle in 2008? (Hint - enough to fill America’s tallest building.)

  • How are expired or unwanted pharmaceuticals safely discarded with the Postal Service’s help without harming the environment?

 Visitors to the green newsroom can learn about the Postal Service’s first test of electric vehicles in 1899, when it found that mail could be delivered in less than half the time taken by horse-drawn wagons. They also can find out how many billions of miles were traveled last year to deliver America’s mail, and how many millions of gallons of alternative fuel were purchased by the Postal Service in 2009.

 Viewers of the site can expand their green knowledge and Earth Day conversation with interesting facts including:  how many tens of thousands of alternative fuel-capable vehicles are in the Postal Service’s fleet; where the Postal Service uses mules to deliver mail; and which mail delivery vehicle has zero emissions, and costs only 2 cents per mile to operate.   “We hope America visits the new green newsroom, and usps.com/green, to learn more about the Postal Service’s commitment to the environment,” Pulcrano said.

 The Postal Service has won more than 75 environmental awards, including 40 White House Closing the Circle, 10 Environmental Protection Agency WasteWise Partner of the Year, Climate Action Champion, Direct Marketing Association Green Echo, and the Postal Technology International Environmental Achievement of the Year, 2009.

The Postal Service receives no tax dollars for operating expenses, and relies on the sale of postage, products and services to fund its operations.

Gold Star Navy SEAL Mom Leads Pro-Troop Message Opposed to Cindy Sheehan’s Protest Both Lost Sons in Iraq. 
Now they Face-Off in a War of Ideals

The nation’s largest grassroots, pro-troop organization, Move America Forward, is sending their main spokesperson, Debbie Lee back to Hood River, Oregon this week to face off against Cindy Sheehan, the anti-war protester who camped outside of President Bush’s Crawford, TX ranch.

“Hood River is my hometown,” said Debbie Lee, whose son Marc was the first Navy SEAL to be killed in the war in Iraq. “When I heard that Cindy Sheehan was going to be protesting the war, and protesting Insitu here in MY hometown, I knew I had to be there. That’s where I raised Marc and the rest of my children, that’s my home, and there’s no way I am going to let Cindy Sheehan bring her anti-American message without being there to say ‘You don’t speak for me, Cindy!’

Through both have lost sons in the war, Debbie Lee speaks out in support of the troops and their missions in the war on terror. Her inspiring speeches at rallies across the country have inspired but most of all thanked our troops for their sacrifices.  Cindy Sheehan has chosen to speak out against the war, often making unsubstantiated claims that her son Casey “stood up against an unjust war” despite the fact that her son re-enlisted and volunteered for the mission that ended his life.

Debbie Lee will be leading the pro-troop rally, expressing gratitude for our troops this Saturday April 17th in contrast to the anti-war ‘conference’ being held in the same town, where Cindy Sheehan is expected to speak in opposition to the War on Terror and the use of drone unmanned aircraft in that conflict.

Debbie’s son Marc was killed August 2nd of 2006 in Ramadi Iraq, sacrificing his own life to save his fellow SEALs. After a fellow teammate was wounded, Marc stood up in the line of fire twice to provide cover for his buddies to retreat. After seeing his team returned safely to base, Marc volunteered to go out again to find the same insurgents and took sniper fire through a window, again putting himself between the enemy and his fellow SEALs. Marc was posthumously awarded a Silver Star, a Bronze Star for Valor and a Purple Heart for his actions.

Casey Sheehan was killed on Palm Sunday, April 4th, 2004. An armored truck mechanic in the 82nd Field Artillery Regiment of the Army, Casey volunteered to go on a combat mission to rescue a group of soldiers pinned down by intense enemy fire. In the resulting firefight, Casey and 7 other soldiers gave their lives. Casey was posthumously awarded a Bronze star and Purple Heart for his heroic actions that day.

“Cindy Sheehan has trashed our troops, their mission, and the legacy left by millions of troops who have come before and sacrificed their lives to pay for the freedoms we now enjoy. Cindy takes those freedoms for granted; she does not recognize that without our brave troops, she would not have the freedom to speak out as she does. I’m going to back to my hometown of Hood River to remind Cindy that she doesn’t speak for Americans like myself and our members of Move America Forward. Unlike her, we support our troops, we appreciate their sacrifices, and we are grateful for what they’re doing right now, in the Middle East, to protect us back home.” concluded Lee.

Folk Arts Fair Issues Call for Folk Artists
The Sharlot Hall Museum is inviting folk artists, craftspeople and performers to participate in this year’s Folk Arts Fair, June 5-6 on the Museum grounds, 415 W. Gurley St. in Prescott. Participant application forms are available at the Museum and on the Museum’s web site at

 Under the banner of “The Village of Traditions,” this year’s fair will feature themed areas where artists of similar specialties will gather to demonstrate their skills. Demonstrators, performers and history interpreters will animate many aspects of frontier life, including sheep shearing, candle-dipping, wood carving, survival skills and Dutch oven baking.

Urban Dare Phoenix
Now in its fifth season, the Urban Dare series of adventure races comes to Phoenix on Saturday, March 27. This year the challenge is even bigger – with 30 cities hosting events nationwide!

Urban Dare requires two person teams to navigate through metro landscapes to find and solve clues, document each success, and beat the clock while covering approximately five miles on foot or public transportation.

Like a half-day Amazing Race meets National Treasure, participants use a combination of brains and brawn to complete the fun-filled assignments. Each team needs to bring a digital camera or cell phone with camera. Map and notepad are beneficial.

Out of the starting block teams will pick up clue sheets. For checkpoints that mention a dare, teams must accomplish tasks and get passports stamped before moving on. On checkpoints that mention a photo, teams must get a photo showing they were there. Dares range from throwing a bulls-eye, scaling a climbing wall, completing a puzzle, etc. Winners finish in about two hours and most will finish under four hours.

Urban Dare Phoenix will start and finish at Jackson’s on 3rd . Check-in begins at 11:00 a.m. and will continue up to the start of the race at noon. Proceeds go to fight breast cancer. The winning team will compete for $5000 in the next Super Dare.

  • 1940 : Near Montignac, France, a collection of prehistoric cave paintings are discovered by four teenagers who stumbled upon the ancient artwork after following their dog down a narrow entrance into a cavern. The 15,000- to 17,000-year-old paintings, consisting mostly of animal representations, are among the finest examples of art from the Upper Paleolithic period. First studied by the French archaeologist Henri-Édouard-Prosper Breuil, the Lascaux grotto consists of a main cavern 66 feet wide and 16 feet high.

    Have you ever wondered what happened to the 56 men who signed The Declaration of Independence?
    Five signers were captured by the British as traitors and tortured before they died.
    Twelve had their homes ransacked and burned. Two lost their sons serving in the Revolutionary Army; another had two sons captured. Nine of the 56 fought and died from wounds or hardships of the Revolutionary War.
     
     They signed and they pledged their lives, their fortunes, and their sacred honor.
     
     What kind of men were they?
     
     Twenty-four were lawyers and jurists.  
     Eleven were merchants.
     Nine were farmers and large plantation owners... men of means...well educated...  but
     they signed the Declaration of Independence knowing full well that the penalty would be death if they were captured
     
     Carter Braxton of Virginia, a wealthy planter and trader, saw his ships swept from the seas by the British Navy. He sold his home and properties to pay his debts, and died in rags.
     
     Thomas McKeam was so hounded by the British that he was forced to move his family almost constantly.
     
     He served in the Congress without pay, and his family was kept in hiding.  His possessions were taken from him, and poverty was his reward.
     
     Vandals or soldiers looted the properties of Dillery, Hall, Clymer, Walton, Gwinnett, Heyward, Ruttledge, and Middleton.
     
     At the battle of Yorktown, Thomas Nelson, Jr., noted that the British general, Cornwallis had taken over the Nelson home for his headquarters.  He quietly urged General George Washington to open fire. The home was destroyed, and Nelson died bankrupt.
     
     Francis Lewis had his home and properties destroyed. The enemy jailed his wife, and she died within a few months.
     
     John Hart was driven from his wife's bedside as she lay dying.  Their 13 children fled for their lives.  His fields and his gristmill were laid to waste.
     
     For more than a year he lived in forests and caves, returning home to find his wife dead and his children vanished.

    So, please take a few minutes while enjoying your 4th of July holiday to remember and silently thank these patriots.
     
     It's not much to ask, considering the price they paid.
