RICHARD "Dick" CULLEN BRIMS

Dick is a U.S. Air Force Vietnam Veteran
Dick left behind his wife, Christina; his Mother, Mrs. Quindanell Brims (MHS Nurse, from 1964 until her retirement, also deceased 06-1999); his sisters, Janet (Brims) Fukuda, MHS; 1976 and Susan/Nancy Brims, MHS;1976. Dick was a Major in the U.S. Air Force, and was a highly decorated helicopter pilot, receiving the Air Force Cross for heroism for flying rescue during the Mayaguez rescue mission. The Air Force Cross is the Air Force's 2nd highest award. "Valor," the Air Force Magazine, Journal of the Air Force Association, dated September 1991, Vol.74, No.9 published an article by Contributing Editor, John L. Frisbee, titled: "The Mayaguez Incident." Dick was one of four to receive the distinguished Air Force Cross award for the unsurpassed heroism performed; they were the last to be accorded that honor in Southeast Asia. "The Last Battle of Vietnam," by Ric Hunter, dated 04/2000, is a 25 year retrospective article of the SS Mayaguez Incident. In his sophomore year of high school, Dick was a member of Parnassus; his junior year he was in the National Honor Society; and in his senior he was President of the Fellowship Club, a member of the "Panther Tracks" newspaper staff, and member of Senior Class Council. In 1964, he was 1, of only 10 selected seniors, to attend a special class to increase their knowledge of computers, that was held only once a week at MHS. Dick was 1 of only 7 seniors that graduated with Highest Distinction. Dick last resided in Niceville, Okaloosa County, Florida. SANDRA "Sandy" ELAINE COOPER

Born: 11-16-1946
Died: 09-29-2001, at 54 years of age, in Glendale, Maricopa County, Arizona.

During Sandy's freshman year she was on the Honor Roll. During her freshman and sophomore years she was active in Girls' League Council, Spanish Club, and Language Institute. Her junior year she was again in the Spanish Club, as well as active in Tri-Hi-Y and the Fellowship Club. Sandy last resided in Glendale, Maricopa County, Arizona. SUE ANN (DAVIS) THUMAN

Died: 12-15-2001, at age 55, of Phoenix, Maricopa County, Arizona.

Sue Ann Thuman, passed away Saturday, 12/15/2001 at her residence. Sue moved to the valley in the early 1960's and was a member of the 1st graduating class of MHS in 1964. Sue played piano and sang in a trio called "The Velvets" during her senior year. She had worked as a chiropractic assistant until 1986, but had for the last number of years enjoyed volunteering at several churches. Sue is survived by her loving husband of 21 years, David Thuman; a brother James Robert Davis (MHS; 1968) of Lansing, Michigan; a sister, Trudy Davis of Evansville, Orleans County, Vermont; her mother Virginia Grau of Las Vegas, Clark County, Nevada; and numerous other family members including a favorite aunt and uncle, Susie and John Kinsinger of Las Vegas, Nevada. A service in celebration of Sue's life was held on Saturday, 12/22/2001, at Camelback Bible Church, 3900 East Stanford Drive, Paradise Valley, Arizona. Memorial contributions may be made in Sue's name to World Vision, PO Box 70200, Tacoma, Pierce County, Washington 98481-0200. DIANA LYNN (ESPARZA) MULLIS

Died: 01-02-1994, at 47 years of age, in Phoenix, Maricopa County, Arizona.

Diana lived in New Mexico prior to moving to Arizona. Diana was in the Glee Club her freshman year. She was President of the Spanish Club her freshman and sophomore years. Her sophomore, junior and senior years, she was a member of Future Teacher's of America (FTA); of which, she served as Vice-president during her junior year, and President during her senior year. She was involved in the Pep Club and Student Council during her freshman, sophomore and junior years. She was in Girls' League Council her Senior year. Diana married Rhettman A. Mullis of South Carolina. During Rhettman's Navy career they traveled the continental United States. Diana's favorite place to live was Whidbey Island, Washington. She was a member of the Navy Wives Club. She is a mother to 4 children; Yvonne (Mullis) Donaldson, MHS, 1983 (husband, Curtis Donaldson), Rhettman Mullis, Jr., MHS, 1984, Scott Michael Mullis, and Devry Mullis. Diana was preceded in death by her son, Scott Michael Mullis. Diana has 4 grandchildren. Diana died at 47 years of age from muscular sclerosis (MS). She was a wonderful, caring woman, always cheerful and full of fun, in spite of her illness. She is loved and missed by all of her family. PAUL RICHARD FARKAS

Born: 08-03-1946, in Akron, Summit County, Ohio
Died: 08-24-2004, at 58 years of age, from a brain tumor, in Las Vegas, Clark County, Nevada

Paul is a Vietnam Veteran of the U.S. Air Force.
Paul loved bridge, golf, tennis, music and playing Frisbee with his beloved dogs. He was a linguist (Vietnamese and Spanish) and served as a translator for the U.S. Air Force Intelligence in Vietnam. Paul was a Duplicate Bridge Life Master. He graduated from McGeorge Law School and practiced in Chico, Butte County, California, before moving to Las Vegas, Nevada to be with cherished family and friends while battling a brain tumor. He graduated from Maryvale High School in Phoenix, Maricopa County, Arizona. Paul was on the Honor Roll his freshman, and sophomore class years. He participated on the Golf team during his freshman, sophomore and junior class years. He was in football his freshman year, Lettermen's Club his sophomore and junior years, and was a member of the Reading Club and Key Club (derived from the Kiwanis Club) during his senior year. Paul is predeceased by his Father, Nicholas J. Farkas (dob:04/20/1925-dod:02/23/1985); Corporal (CPL) in the U.S.Army, World War II; interment at National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona (NMCA), Section 13, Site 2453. Paul is survived by his sister, Carol Farkas of Las Vegas, Nevada; brothers, Bill Farkas of Las Vegas, Nevada and Jim Farkas of Phoenix, Arizona; two nieces; five nephews (Louis and Terrance Farkas, MHS; 1975); and five grand nephews. His family gathered to celebrate Paul's life on Sunday, 09/05/2004. JEAN "Jeanie" ANNE (REGADANZ) ANDERSON

Born: approx. 1946
Died: 04-04-2001

Prior to MHS opening in 1962-63, Jeanie attended Carl Hayden High school (CHHS) during her freshman and sophomore class years. During Jeanie's freshman, junior and senior class years, she was a member of Girl's Athletic Association (GAA), Student Body Council, and Pom Pons; her senior year she was captain of the JV Pom Pons. Jeanie was secretary of her junior class and a member of Girl's League Council her senior year. Jeanie's husband is Lyle Anderson, they were married for 35 years and they have one son, Paul Anderson. Jeanie had worked at the same law office for over 25 years. She was the strength for our family of 5 children and both parents (still living). Jeanie had broken her leg, which required 7 pins. She was in a wheelchair, as she was not to put any weight on it. Two weeks after her return home, she had a blood clot that ended her life within 15 minutes. Our Mom and Dad were with her as Lyle had just gone back to Phoenix to help with his Mom's probate. Her passing was very sudden and we are still suffering deeply over this huge loss in our family. Jeanie is missed every day by everyone that knew her. Jeanie's sister is Bethel (Regadanz) Knapp, MHS; 1967.

 

LANA KAY (WINTER) CARSON

Born: approx. 1946
Died: 10-11-2006, at 60 years of age, after a year long battle with cancer, of Phoenix, Maricopa County, Arizona.

She is survived by her husband of 31 years, Dr. Stephen L. Carson, and three sons, Kenneth Dixon Carson (Dayna) of Wellington, Colorado, Nathan Carson of Phoenix, Arizona, and Mark Carson (Melissa) of Chandler, Arizona. She has 2 grandchildren, Darah and Levi, and was expecting a granddaughter, Katherine Kay, in January, 2007. She is also survived by her mother Dorothy Winter, her mother-in-law Bonita Carson as well as her brothers Jack Winter and Terry Winter. Her Father, John E. Winter, preceded her in death (dob: 05/14/1914 - dod: 03/03/2005, he last resided in Hurricane, Washington County, Utah 84737). During Lana's freshman, sophomore and junior class years, she participated in the Future Homemakers of America (FHA) conventions. She was a member of FHA all 4 class years, and served at the FHA District Secretary her sophomore year. She was the Mistress of Ceremonies and apart of the Speech Festival during her sophomore year. Lana was on Youth Traffic Safety Council her junior year. She was the Class Treasurer and played tennis during both her sophomore and junior years. Lana was a member of NOMA Spelling and Girls' State her junior year. She was a member of Future Teacher's of America (FTA), Parnassus, and Youth Science Tour during her senior year. In 1964, Lana was 1 of 6 MHS seniors in Physics that were sponsored by Arizona Public Service Company to attend a special tour of the General Dynamic's Atomic Laboratory. She was on the Honor Roll all four class years and was 1 of 7 senior who graduated with Highest Distinction. Lana was an accomplished woman having earned a Masters Degrees with honors in Industrial Engineering, Counseling, and Education. She retired from Salt River Project in 2001. Her greatest joys were entertaining her family and friends, traveling, and serving as a volunteer with the Phoenix Police Department. We who knew and loved her will miss her very much. A celebration of her life took place Saturday, 10/21/2006 at Bueler Mortuary, 14 West Hulet Drive, Chandler, Arizona.
