LACHELLE "Shelly" JEANNINE WAITE
Born: approx.1966-1967, in Providence, Rhode Island.
Died: 01-16-1986, at age 18, at her residence, in Phoenix, Arizona.
Lachelle moved to Arizona in 1981 from Rhode Island. She was a 1985
graduate of MHS where she participated in chorus and dance and was a
tutor to other students. An Arizona Republic news article "Body of young
woman found in family's home" by Steve Yozwiak, stated: An 18-year-old
west Phoenix woman who recently graduated from Maryvale High School was
killed Thursday morning at her home, a short distance from the school.
Lachelle "Shelly" Waite, was found dead in a rear bedroom of her
family's home shortly after noon Thursday (01/16/1986) by her sister
Annette, 20, according to police, neighbors and coworkers of the Mother.
Waite was the daughter of Ann Marie White of the 5900 block of West
Mulberry Drive, who recently divorced, according to coworkers of the
Mother. White was unavailable for comment late Thursday. Sgt. Brad Thiss,
a police spokesman, refused to reveal the cause of death or a possible
motive for the killing, because investigators still were looking for
several people they want to question, including the victim's boyfriend,
who he did not identify. Coworkers of the Mother, who works as a
laboratory technician at Phoenix Baptist Hospital, described Waite as a
hardworking young woman who loved to watch football. Waite's boyfriend
had recently won a football scholarship to a college in Texas, according
to Rose Behl, who has worked with the slain girl's Mother for much of
the past three years. "This is going to be a real blow to her (Mother),"
especially because one of White's brothers died last month in an East
Coast construction accident, Behl said. White was described as "an
excellent Mother" who "cared about her kids a lot," said Mark Thomas,
another coworker. Waite had graduated in June from MHS, where she
participated in chorus and dance and was a tutor for other students,
said Martin P. Ulloa, an assistant principal. She had attended Alhambra
H.S. before moving briefly to San Francisco, then returning to Phoenix
to attend MHS for her junior and senior years, Ulloa said. Thiess said
Waite last was seen alive about 7:30 a.m. when other members of her
family left the home to go to work or school. Annette found her younger
sister's body about 12:15 p.m. when she returned home to give Waite a
ride to work at a discount department store in the Maryvale Mall, Thiss
said. The front door of the home was open when the sister arrived, Thiss
said. Neighbors said they had not seen or heard anything unusual at the
home Thursday morning. Survivors include her Mother, Ann Marie White;
Father, Lloyd Waite; stepmother, Linda Waite; stepfather, Kenneth White;
grandparents, Bernard Speaks, Mary Ross, Simon Waite and Lois Gomes;
great-grandparents, Dorothy Archibald and Susie Waite; sisters, JoAnn,
11, and Annette, 20; half-sister, Ebony; brother, Robert, 12; and
stepbrother, Kenneth Duarte. Arrangements were made by Webber & Sons
Chapel, 1641 E. Jefferson, Phoenix, Arizona. Funeral services were held
in Providence, Rhode Island.
