GO GREEN
Tips for Going Green
Reduce your Carbon
Imprint
1. Turn off the lights when you leave the room.
2. Replace bulbs with new low energy bulbs.
3. Reuse shopping bags
4. Carpool
5. Conserve water
6. Inflate tires
7. Recycle
8. About 90 percent of the energy used to wash clothes goes to heating the
water. Cool things off and save 349 pounds of carbon dioxide a year.
Household Tips
Pour a
packet of lemonade Kool-Aid (the only flavor that works) into the detergent
cup and run the dishwasher while empty. The citric acid in the mix wipes out
stains! And it smells lemon fresh!
Eliminate ear mites. All it takes
is a few drops of Wesson Corn Oil in your cat's ear... massage it in, then
clean with a cotton ball. Repeat daily for 3 days. The oil soothes the cat's
skin, smothers the mites, and accelerates healing.
Easy eyeglass protection... to
prevent the screws in eyeglasses from loosening, apply a small drop of
Maybelline Crystal Clear Nail Polish to the threads of the screws before
tightening them.
Smart splinter remover: Just pour a
drop of Elmer's Glue-All over the splinter, let dry, and peel the dried glue
off the skin. The splinter sticks to the dried glue.
Before
you head to the drugstore for a high-priced inhaler filled with mysterious
chemicals, try chewing on a couple of curiously strong Altoids peppermints.
They'll clear up your stuffed nose.
Drinking
two glasses of Gatorade can relieve headache pain almost immediately-without
the unpleasant side effects caused by traditional pain relievers?
Rainy day cure for dog odor: Next
time your dog comes in from the rain, simply wipe down the animal with
Bounce or any dryer sheet, instantly making your dog smell springtime fresh.
Kills fleas instantly... Dawn
Dishwashing Liquid does the trick. Add
a few drops to your dog's bath and shampoo the animal thoroughly. Rinse well
to avoid skin irritations. Good-bye fleas.
Did you know that Colgate
Toothpaste makes an excellent salve for burns?
Use leftover eggshells to shine your glassware. Simply drop
some crushed shells in vase, add warm water and a drop of dishwashing
liquid, and give it a good swirl
A simple spruce up for the microwave: place a bowl of water
mixed with lemon juice inside and run the machine on high
for one minute, wipe out to clean.
Here are the five most common early warning signs of a heart
attack:
-- Chest pain.
-- Pain or discomfort in the neck and jaw.
-- Pain or discomfort in the arm, shoulder or back.
-- Sudden feeling of profound fatigue.
-- Sudden shortness of breath. |

The
Longhorn Saloon and Grill
Grand Opening
What were you doing on Friday
night May 30th? If you were not
at the Longhorn Saloon and
Grill, then whatever you were
doing you were doing it in the
wrong place. The Longhorn Saloon
and Grill is the new "In" place
in the West Valley. It is family
owned and operated with five
star roots that reach into some
of the best New York
restaurants. Maybe even one or
two highlighted in the long
running television series and
just released movie.
Chef
Charles Steppe and his brother
Chris opened their restaurant
the first part of this year but
on the 30th they held a ribbon
cutting to celebrate their
becoming members of the Surprise
Regional Chamber of Commerce one
of the fasts growing chambers in
the West Valley. Chris and
Charles and their mother Nancy
Tuatagaloa welcomed David Lewis
President/CEO of the Surprise
Chamber along with a large
number of Chamber members, and
Youngtown Mayor Michael LeVault
and Councilmember Dorena Mello
and several other Councilmembers
to the Longhorn. Three
generations of the family Chris,
Nancy and Shay (the chef's
daughter) took part in the
ribbon cutting. Charles was busy
in the kitchen preparing the
feast for their guests. Included
in this were hamburger and
pulled pork sliders, fried
mushrooms, chicken croquettes,
pigs-in-a-blank, stuffed pasta
and fruit, all in large
quantities, no one left hungry.
If you missed the events of the
30th including Emil Flaim the
pianist/singer who entertained
everyone throughout the evening,
you can enjoy the Longhorn for
lunch and dinner throughout the
week in their sports bar, lounge
or dinning room.
The Longhorn Saloon and Grill
is located at 13232 N. 111th
Ave., just South of Grand in
Youngtown. For all who have no
idea of where Youngtown is, the
town of just over 6,000 is
located on the Agua Fria River
in the West Valley, South of
Grand Ave., and just West of Sun
City. Nearby attractions include
the Bradshaw Mountains, Lake
Pleasant Regional Park and the
University of Phoenix Stadium.
Youngtown still enjoys the
tranquil, small town feel while
providing residents with five
parks, its own police force, a
library, clubhouse, a lake,
beautiful sunsets and wildlife.
The town is a vibrant mix of
young singles, families,
professionals, blue collar and
retirees, and is close to all
the great shopping,
entertainment, art and work
locations in the West Valley.
The next time your looking for a
great meal in a relaxed
atmosphere just head over to the
Longhorn Saloon and Grill, it's
worth the gas. If you would like
information on their live
entertainment, specials or just
need directions call
623-933-6023.
On the left in the cowboy hat is
the well known Arizona Dude who
partook in the celebration at
the invitation of Panorama Hills
Monthly. On the right in the
suite is David Lewis
President/CEO of the Surprise
Chamber. And in the center
cutting the ribbon is Nancy with
her son Chris and her
granddaughter Shay. |

Natalie Gulbis
Nationwide essay contest driven by Gulbis'
personal story
Winner to spend day with
Gulbis in Las Vegas
RSM McGladrey
http://www.rsmmcgladrey.com , a leading provider of
accounting, tax and business consulting services, announces its
"Who's Behind Your Success?" nationwide essay contest, featuring
LPGA star and Team McGladrey member Natalie Gulbis. Inspired in
part by Gulbis' own personal essay about her father, the
"Who's Behind Your Success? contest launches June 24 and culminates
with a grand prize package that consists of one lucky participant
and a guest spending a day with Gulbis in her hometown of Las Vegas,
including a morning workout and nine holes of golf, followed by a
dinner with Natalie.
The "Who's Behind Your Success?" contest, which is open to
anyone over age 18, invites participants to submit essays of 200
words or less, highlighting the most influential and/or
inspirational individual behind the success in their life. Essays
can be submitted through Aug. 4, 2008, at the contest¹s web site,
www.rsmmcgladrey.com/nataliecontest , which also will feature
Gulbis' own personal essay about her father, who she calls the most
influential person behind her success. One grand prize winner will
be announced Oct. 21 during the National Championship rounds of The
PGA McGladrey Team Championship, the first nationwide grassroots
best-ball amateur championship managed by The PGA of America. Five
finalists will receive the following: TaylorMade Driver, adidas golf
shoes, a Canon Six PowerShot and a SkyCaddie SG-5. The target launch
date coincides with the week of the U.S. Women's Open at Interlachen
Country Club outside Minneapolis, Minn. The "Who's Behind
Your Success? contest continues McGladrey's national golf
initiatives, which include hosting The PGA McGladrey Team
Championship. Along with Gulbis, other Team McGladrey members
include PGA Tour Pros Zach Johnson and Chris DiMarco.
'We are excited to launch this contest with Natalie, one of the most
popular LPGA golfers in the world," McGladrey Chief Marketing
Officer Mark Audino said. "This initiative is part of our ongoing
efforts to raise awareness of the McGladrey brand through golf and
mirrors how McGladrey is behind the success of our middle-market
clients to help enhance their business performance. The "Who's
Behind Your Success?" contest enables one lucky person to play golf
with one of the best professional golfers in the world. We are
proud to be able to offer this opportunity to that person while
honoring the individual that has meant so much to them, much like
Natalie's father."
Gulbis is one of the most well-known golfers on the LPGA. A recent
Golf.com online poll showed that Gulbis beat out current No. 1
Lorena Ochoa, Annika Sorenstam and Paula Creamer as the LPGA member
with whom most golfers would want to play a round of golf. This
contest will give one grand prize winner that chance.
"I am very proud to work with McGladrey on the "Who's Behind Your
Success?" contest. I think it's a great idea for a contest and I
hope everyone will participate," Gulbis said. "I submitted my own
essay about my dad, who sacrificed a lot to help me keep my dreams
alive, and I hope it encourages people across the country to
participate. I¹m glad to be a part of the selection process, and
I¹ll be eager to meet the grand prize winner in person!"

Pausing & Remembering a Bad Time in
Arizona Journalism
History
Glendale Daily Planet Publisher Ed Sharpe pauses and
contemplates the passing of Arizona Republic reporter
Don Bolles, who was attacked by a car bomb in the
hotel¹s parking lot 32 years ago this month (1976) and
later died of his injuries.
The Hotel Clarendon in midtown Phoenix, where the event
took place, has an interesting historical display on Don
Bolles and is well worth visiting. Sharpe was attending
a meeting of Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ),
who along with other Valley journalism organizations,
gathered to make a toast to UNITY 2008 Journalism
conference happening in Chicago and paid tribute to
Bolle's memory.
Don Bolles (July 28, 1928 - June 13, 1976) was an
American investigative reporter whose murder in a
bombing is linked to the Mafia. Bolles grew up in
Teaneck, New Jersey, and pursued a newspaper career, in
the footsteps of his father (chief of the Associated
Press bureau in New Jersey) and grandfather. He
graduated from Beloit College with a degree in
government, where he was editor of the campus newspaper,
and received a President's Award for personal
achievement. After a stint in the U.S. Army in the
Korean War assigned to an anti-aircraft unit, he joined
the Associated Press as a sports editor and rewriter in
New York, New Jersey and Kentucky. In 1962, he was hired
by the Arizona Republic newspaper, published at
the time by Nina Mason Pulliam, where he quickly found a
spot on the investigative beat and gained a reputation
for dogged reporting of influence peddling, bribery, and
land swindles. Former colleagues, though, say he seemed
to grow disillusioned in late 1975 and early 1976, and
that he had requested to be taken off the investigative
beat, moving to coverage of Phoenix City Hall and then
the state Legislature. Two marriages produced seven
children, four from the first and two from the second
which included one daughter who was born deaf. Bolles
was the brother of Richard Nelson Bolles, author of the
best-selling job-hunting book, What Color Is Your
Parachute? He shares a grandfather, Stephen Bolles,
with humanist theoretician Edmund Blair Bolles.
On June 2, 1976,
Bolles left behind a short note in his office typewriter
explaining he would meet with an informant, then go to a
luncheon meeting, and be back about 1:30 p.m. He was
responsible for covering a routine hearing at the State
Capitol, and planned to attend a movie with second wife
Rosalie Kasse that night in celebration of their eighth
wedding anniversary. The source promised information on
a land deal involving top state politicians and possibly
the mob. A wait of several minutes in the lobby of the
Hotel Clarendon (now known as the Clarendon Hotel) was
concluded with a call for Bolles himself to the front
desk, where the conversation lasted no more than two
minutes. Bolles then exited the hotel, his car in the
adjacent parking lot just south of the hotel on Fourth
Avenue.
Apparently, Bolles started the car, even moving a few
feet, before a remote detonated bomb consisting of six
sticks of dynamite taped to the underside of the car
beneath the driver's seat was detonated, the impact
shattering his lower body, opening the driver's door,
and leaving him mortally wounded while half outside the
vehicle. Both legs and one arm were amputated over a ten
day stay in St. Joseph's Hospital, the eleventh day was
the reporter's last. However, his last words after being
found in the parking lot the day of the bombing were:
"They finally got me. The Mafia. Emprise. Find John
(Harvey Adamson)."
The exact motive for the crime remains a mystery, but
many speculate the Mafia holds responsibility, as a
large concentration of Bolles' work involved organized
crime, even going as far as to run a story naming over
200 known mafia members operating in the state of
Arizona. Some suspected that Kemper Marley, a man who
made millions in the liquor distribution business in
Arizona, was behind the Bolles murder, but Phoenix
police could find no evidence linking him with the
crime, and he continued conducting business in Arizona
until meeting his own death, cancer-related, on June 25,
1990 in La Jolla, California.
The incident sparked an investigation in the months that
followed, known as the Arizona Project, with Bob Greene
assuming the head and drawing nearly 40 reporters and
editors from 23 newspapers including The Milwaukee
Journal and Newsday.
John Harvey Adamson pleaded guilty in 1977 to
second-degree murder for building and planting the bomb
that killed Bolles. Adamson accused Phoenix contractor
Max Dunlap, an associate of Kemper Marley, of ordering
the hit, and Chandler plumber James Robison of
triggering the bomb. Adamson testified against Dunlap
and Robison, who were convicted of first-degree murder
in the same year, but whose convictions were overturned
in 1978. When Adamson refused to testify again, Adamson
was charged and convicted of first-degree murder in 1980
and sentenced to death, which was overturned by the
Arizona Supreme Court. In 1989, Robison was re-charged,
and re-tried and acquitted in 1993, but pleaded guilty
to a charge of soliciting an act of criminal violence
against Adamson. In 1990, Dunlap was re-charged when
Adamson agreed to testify again, and was found guilty of
first-degree murder.
The new $400 million Newseum will feature Bolles' 1976
Datsun 210, which had sat 28 years in a Phoenix Police
impound lot, as the centerpiece of a gallery devoted
solely to the slain journalist.

WELLS FARGO
BEGINS COLLECTION DRIVE FOR AZ
FOOD BANKS
Summer Collection Drive Continues Through July 15
Wells Fargo today began a two-week drive to collect food for food banks
throughout Arizona. Food collection bins have been
placed in the 260-plus Wells Fargo Community Banking
stores throughout the state. The drive will continue
until July 15.
Donations will benefit
members of the Association of Arizona Food Banks, whose
members distribute more than 80 million pounds of food
each year, enough to provide 168,600 meals every day
through 1,100 sites. People who wish to donate cash can
send checks to the Association of Arizona Food Banks,
2100 N. Central Ave., Ste. 230, Phoenix, AZ 85004.
Donations also may be made online at
http://www.azfoodbanks.org/?action=gid_62.
The poor economy, the
price of gas, the price of food – everyone is being
stretched to the limit, and food banks are no
different. Demand for services is at record levels and
donations continue to trail behind the demand.
“The idea for
off-season food drives came about when we continually
saw demand for food boxes increase during the summer
months,” said Ginny Hildebrand, executive director,
Association of Arizona Food Banks. “Food banks’
supplies from holiday food collections were quickly
depleted, leaving their stock of food exhausted. Wells
Fargo has a long record of supporting our organization
and other service agencies in the Valley, and we’re
pleased to work with them on this new project.”
“All of us at Wells
Fargo are excited to help the association with this food
drive,” said Pam Conboy, regional president for Wells
Fargo Regional Banking in Arizona. “The statistics
about need in our state are sobering: 14.2 percent of
Arizona adults, one in 12 seniors and one in five
children live in poverty. And every fourth person in
line at a soup kitchen is a child. During our 2007 food
drive, Wells Fargo team members collected 70,000 pounds
of food, and this year we hope to raise even more.”
In Arizona, Wells
Fargo has 14,000 team members and 260 stores.
Wells Fargo & Company is a diversified financial
services company with $595 billion in assets, providing
banking, insurance, investments, mortgage and consumer
finance through almost 6,000 stores and the internet (wellsfargo.com)
across North America and internationally. Wells Fargo
Bank, N.A. is the only bank in the U.S., and one of only
two banks worldwide, to have the highest possible credit
rating from both Moody's Investors Service, “Aaa,” and
Standard & Poor's Ratings Services, “AAA.”

Wilhelm
Automotive’s Callihan and Son Win National “Body For
Life” Competition.
Company Adopts Program For Employees.
Wilhelm Automotive is pleased to announce that Chris
Callihan, along with his son, Brandon, won the Grand
Champion Family Division of the National Body For Life
Challenge presented annually by EAS Body For Life. Chris
is the manager of Wilhelm Automotive’s Surprise
location.
The Body For Life Challenge is a 12-week healthy living
contest based on the proven principles in the
best-selling book Body-For-Life. These principles
include getting yourself to eat more frequent balanced
and healthy meals as well as adhering to a structured
strength-training and cardio exercise program.
The results that Chris and Brandon produced together
were simply amazing. Chris lost 13 pounds of fat while
decreasing his body fat by 12% while Brandon added 10
pounds of lean muscle and dropped his body fat into the
single digits. Their before and after results beat out
thousands of entries nationwide.
In addition to the way they felt about themselves, the
program brought the two of them closer together. Before
the program, Chris was busy with work and Brandon with
school. During the program, they spent time together
working out, eating and talking about their goals in
life. After program completion, Chris said “It’s great
to have more quality family time. We both have more
confidence, energy and stamina and are enjoying life.
Our job now is to spread the word on what the program
did for us and what it can do for others.”
Chris took his story back to his coworkers at Wilhelm.
He introduced the Body For Life Corporate Challenge to
General Manager Chris Garman. Garman was so impressed by
Callihan’s results that he put up $1500 in prize money
as incentive for the Corporate Challenge. Over 70% of
Wilhelm employees joined the Challenge and many had
outstanding results. Garman said “The Corporate
Challenge was great for employee morale. Many of the
employees began running together, working out together
and planning meals together. We were glad that we were
able to promote a healthy lifestyle to all of our
employees and that we care about their well being.”
In today’s hectic world that we live in, following a
healthy lifestyle can sometimes be secondary. The Body
For Life Challenge has proven that it can bring families
together for all the right reasons. Chris and Brandon
Callihan and the Wilhelm Automotive family of employees
are perfect examples. For more information about how you
can participate in the Body For Life Challenge either as
an individual or as a group, please go to
www.BodyForLife.com and click on the
Challenge section. You can also view Chris and Brandon’s
before and after photos at the site along with their
complete stories.

According to Audrey Gietzen,
Executive Director for United Blood Services/Arizona, the
Independence Day holiday week is the most difficult time of the
summer to ensure hospital patients across the state receive the
blood transfusions they need. "While donor vacations reduce the
number of people giving blood, heavy traffic on the roads and
highways increases the potential for accidents and the need for
blood," said Gietzen. "Every 15 minutes, eight blood donors are
needed to support the needs of Arizona hospital patients."
Give blood. Be a hero. Help United
Blood Services declare independence from blood shortages this

Royce Murray, Native of LA.,
began playing the
Hammond Organ at age seven. Inspired by legends like,
Jimmy
Smith, Jack McDuff and, Jimmy McGriff, he brought his
gospel influence into his love for Jazz and Blues, to
form his
own, unique style.
At the age of 7 years old Royce's teacher Joni Baxter,
(who Royce credits with making him the player he is
today) started teaching him blues and jazz progressions.
Then Royce found his calling and discovered a passion to
play the Hammond Organ, When Joni heard him play the
Hues she said, "Just let him play!"
Royce's older brother Sonny brought over a Jimmy Smith
jazz album, and once Royce Listened to the album he knew
Mat was bow the Hammond Organ was supposed to be played,
However, Anne Murray thought otherwise, not considering
jazz for her son because he learned to play gospel in
the church. By age 1.7, Royce was playing everything,
Jimmy Smith, Timmy McGriff, Jack McDuff, Richard"
Groove" Holmes., Charles Earland, Filly Preston and Far]
Grant had recorded, Also, during this time the minister
of music at his church toned down the jazzy 'licks" and
was persistent in Royce playing more chords and was
pleased when his music became "churchy", After awhile
gospel music was all he was playing„ jazz and blues had
fallen by the wayside.
At 27 years old Royce stopped playing and started a
trucking company with his father the late Lloyd Murray.
He didn't get serious about the organ again until the
age of 42. Even then practice time was hard to come by
with his family living in an apartment. The only
resource to practice was at a club in Phoenix, Arizona
during non-business hours in a room where the
temperature was above 90 degrees, in such conditions
practice was limited.
Royce's life changed when Jimmy Smith came to hear him
play at one of his gigs. His friendship with Jimmy was
the musical catalyst that set him free to play Royce
with gospel I overtones, he had learned in church, Jimmy
said, "Play yourself, it’s what made me famous, it will
make you famous too,"
Royce has opened for Tony Monaco, Joey DeFrancesco and
the legendary Jimmy Smith. Royce currently tours with
Blues Hall of Fame artist '"Big Pete" Pearson, and he is
often joined by world renowned artist George Benson at
his Sunday Jazz Jam in Phoenix, Arizona_ Royce's career
has included playing organ for the ABC, CBS and NBC
television soap operas. As an accomplished songwriter,
his credits include R&B icon Barry White, whom he
collaborated with during the 1970’s
On Sunday when Royce is not touring you will find him
playing the Hammond Organ at his church where he still
loves to play good down home gospel. music, in the
summer of 2007 Royce's debut CD/DVD entitled, Now’s The
Time was released on the AMEC Record label where he
became the first jazz artist to join their roster of
successful gospel artists. Royce's unique sound is a
mixture of gospel, straight-ahead jazz,
blues, soul and funk.
String Chemistry Band
Over 20 years ago Chris
Devlin, a 12 string rhythm player and Jorge Ramirez, a
bass player came together with no other intention than
to write songs and practice the music they wrote. At
first, it was no more than a hobby, a fun thing to do.
Both Chris and Jorge were
tired of cover songs, songs that all seemed in one way
or another to say the same thing, they wanted to write
and play something different, exciting, and new.
After a few years of playing
together it seemed like Jorge could read Chris’s mind
and vice versa. Chris would write rhythms, and Jorge
would know exactly where Chris was going with his music
and when Jorge would break out during a song with a base
lead. Chris would know exactly where Jorge was going,
hence the name String Chemistry. They found a unique way
of communicating with each other trough their music, a
Chemistry of sound and mind.
It wasn’t long before they had
enough songs to produce their first CD La
Ventana along with the help of lead guitar
player Joe Carducci.
This web
page is dedicated to all the members of the band, new
and old, String Chemistry fans here in the United
States, and in Europe. With a special thanks to the
String Chemistry web page designer, European CD
distributor, and close friend Hilde in Belgium. Please
enjoy the web page, don’t forget to sign the guest book
and order your CD today!!!!.
Mike Howard friend and Guitarist
I would like to introduce
you to a friend of mine, Mike Howard, guitarist
extraordinaire. I first met Mike when he was performing
with the band, A Touch of Blues. The name of the band
does not do justice to a guitarist like Mike. He is
always at home with a guitar in his hands, no matter if
he is playing jazz, blues, standards or classical
music.

was recently involved in an automobile accident,
from which she sustained very
serious bodily injury. During the evening of
Thursday, January 10, Paula struck a deer while
driving on a county highway near her home in Boerne,
Texas. As she swerved to miss the animal, her truck
rolled countless times and was thrown from the
vehicle through the driver side window. When she
regained consciousness, she was lying in the nearby
grass, with the wheels upturned on her vehicle. As
she realized she needed to call for help, her
cellular phone was missing from it’s holder. Unable
to move, she was encouraged when Pepper, her beloved
dog, ran nearly a mile to a nearby farmhouse to get
help. It was at this exact time that Paula’s
landlord called her. Fortunately, she was able to
reach the cell phone located near her knee, truly a
Godsend... An ambulance arrived on the scene shortly
thereafter, and she was transported to a nearby
“Flight for Life” location. She was then airlifted
by helicopter to the University Hospital in San
Antonio, TX.
Paula’s diagnosed injuries included a broken sternum
and pelvis {both sides, front & back}, cracked ribs
and fractures to three vertebrae. A surgical
procedure was performed on Tuesday, January 15, with
several permanent pins implanted. Her Doctors expect
a full recovery,
however,
this will take several months or years of therapy

TONIGHT, JUNE 2008
Fred Harvey. Mary Colter. Who were they? How did
they affect the development and culture of our
Southwest? Fred, along with his prim waitresses, dubbed
“The Harvey Girls,” have been credited with civilizing
the West. Mary Colter, Harvey Co’s Chief Architect and
Designer, designed Phantom Ranch, Hopi House,
and six other buildings at the Grand Canyon, along
with many others including her masterpiece, La
Posada, in Winslow. Circle the wagons, we’re honing
in on history here.
But who were they really? June’s edition of
Tomorrow’s Theater Tonight features a reading of
Micki Shelton’s spanking-new play, Fred and Mary: An
Unconventional Romance. Spanning the years 1876
through 1958, the quasi-historical play centers on the
life of Mary Colter and her—“this part is
imaginary”—relationship with Fred Harvey.
T3
readings are open to the public at no charge. Donations
are accepted to defray the costs of presenting the
readings. Micki will use audience feedback to refine the
work for three to-be-scheduled readings of the play this
fall (the half-century anniversary of Mary Colter’s
death) across Arizona.
T3 is sponsored by Prescott College
Theatre Department. Gourmet coffee and baked goods are
available for sale throughout the evening. Information:

75th ANNUAL
STATE BAR OF ARIZONA HONORS ITS LEGACY
Phoenix School of Law will be well represented at
Convention
The theme of this year’s 75th Annual State Bar
Convention is “Living Our Legacy” and fits right in with
the Phoenix School of Law. PhoenixLaw is Arizona’s
first private law school, and the only one to offer full
and part-time programs. Celebrating their first
graduation last month, the school is now seeing the
beginnings of their own legacy, as these graduates study
for the bar exam and embark on their careers.
From June 18th-20th, PhoenixLaw students and professors
will be out in force at the State Bar Convention being
held at The Westin La Paloma Resort & Spa in Tucson.
Participants will present at seminars, argue at moot
court presentations, and network with colleagues from
around the state.
Penny Willrich,
(pic right) Director of the Lawyering Process
Program and Associate Professor of Law, is part of the
faculty panel presenting at the “Variations on an Old
Theme” seminar. Covering the “tried-and-true”
fundamentals of effective mentoring programs, she will
also talk about some of the cutting edge theories and
concepts that are emerging.
In a special seminar honoring 11 “Legends in the Law,”
Willrich will speak about one of the first Black lawyers
to shape the legal profession in Arizona, the Hon.
Hayzel B. Daniels. His influence was so great, that the
Black Bar Association was originally named after him.
Assistant Professor David R. Cole (pic below) and Adjunct
Professor Jonathan Schwartz, both retired (pic
left) Maricopa
County Superior Court judges, will be part of the
faculty teaching “The New Arizona Revised Criminal Jury
Instructions.” Ten years in the making, it is the most
comprehensive set of criminal jury instructions in the
State Bar’s history. Cole will also be a panelist at
“Understanding Interpreter Issues,” discussing how to
understand and avoid the legal and ethical pitfalls when
using an interpreter.
Adjunct Professor,
Mark Armstrong, also a retired Maricopa County
Superior Court judge, will be a faculty member on the
panel “What Are the Fact Finders Thinking?” This
seminar focuses on what and how information needs to be
presented in order to persuade a judge, mediator or
evaluator in parental relocation cases.
Additionally, Phoenix School of Law students are
participating in a Moot Court Presentation on “Sex and
the Constitution Revisited.” Leslie Ross, a 2L, is a
faculty panelist about “Children & Their Court.”
About Phoenix School of Law Phoenix School of Law is
Arizona’s only privately owned law school, and the only
Arizona law school offering full-time, part-time and
evening classes. The School received provisional
accreditation from the American Bar Association in June
2007. The mission pillars of PhoenixLaw are to provide
student-centered education, produce professionally
prepared graduates, and serve the underserved. For more
